The Story of the Birth of Jesus

From the Books of Luke and Matthew, paraphrased for young readers.

God had a wonderful gift to give to us. He had promised to send a Savior. God chose Mary, a young Jewish woman, to be the mother of His son.

God sent an angel to tell Mary that she would have a baby. God told Mary to name the baby, Jesus.

Mary was supposed to marry a man named Joseph. When she told him she was going to have a baby, he was upset.

God sent an angel to Joseph while he slept. The angel told him that God had chosen Mary to have Jesus. He told Joseph to marry her and name the baby Jesus.

 

Shortly before the baby was to be born, Mary and Joseph had to leave their home and travel to Bethlehem.

The people had been ordered to visit the city of their birth in order to be counted.

 

When Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem, they looked for a place to stay. There were many people visiting Bethlehem.

They could find no rooms to rent. When Baby Jesus was born, Mary wrapped him in cloth and placed him in a manger.

 

Out in the hills around Bethlehem, there were shepherds watching their sheep. Suddenly, an angel appeared before them. They were very afraid. But the angel told them not to be afraid, for the angel had great news to tell.

The Angel told them that God had sent a Savior. The angel told them where they could find the Baby. More angels appeared and they all sang together, praising God.

 

The shepherds left their sheep and hurried to the place where the angel told them they would find the Baby Jesus.

When they saw the baby, they went out to tell others what had happened. The shepherds praised God for what they had seen. 

Later, wise men came to visit the Baby. They brought gifts fit for a king. They had followed a bright star in the heavens.

 

The Wise men visit Jesus. 

They believed the star was a sign that a great king had been born. The star led them to Jesus. They worshipped Jesus and gave Him their gifts.
