The 130th NY Infantry
was organized in September of 1862, but were transfered to the cavalry
corps on August 11, 1863 first as the 19th NY Cavalry then the 1st NY Dragoons.
The companies were recruited from the following communities: A- Portage,
B- Groveland, C- Attica, D- Wyoming, E- Wellsville, F- Portageville, G-
Angelica, H- Amity, Belmont, I- Nunda, K- Dansville.
During their time
as infantry they served with the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 7th Corps,
Army of the Potomac, but were in no major engagements. As cavalry they
served with the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, Cavalry Corps and were in the
following major engagements: Culpepper Courthouse, Mine Run, Wilderness,
Spottsylvania, Sheridan's Raid to the James River, Yellow Tavern, Richmond,
Cold Harbor, Sheridan's Raid to Trevilian, VA, Petersburg, Front Royal,
New Market, Cedar Creek, Sailors Creek, and Appomattox. They were mustered
out on June 30, 1865 with a total loss of 5 officers and 269 men.
