Ginger is a Coton de Tulear, a rare breed dog that originated in Madagascar, now
called the Malagasy Republic. The breed was brought to the United States by Dr.
Jay Russell 20 years ago, but did not gain much popularity until about 5 years ago,
when people started importing French Cotons. Since Madascar was a French colony for many
years, these adorable little dogs were imported there before they were discovered
in the US. They are little clowns, who like to frolic, but they are also great lapdogs
and anxiety reducers. Petting their soft , non-shedding (no dog allergies!) hair soothes many cares. They
seem to me to be a one person or one family dog in loyalties.
Because of this, they are good "burglar alarms", but will generally
be friendly with people that their master/mistress approve. They are usually healthy
and long lived, but because they are gentle and small boned,
they may not be suitable for children under 6 or 7,
who may do better with a sturdier dog, such as a sheltie, a cocker or a dachshund.
