HICKS, BLANCHE ROMINE - age 87, of Blacksburg, Va., formerly
of Madisonville, passed away 10:40 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 1997,
at Heritage Nursing Home, Blacksburg, Va. A retired Monroe County
school teacher who taught school in the county for 38 years. Served the
First Baptist Church of Madisonville as a Sunday School teacher and the
Sweetwater Baptist Association as a Vacation Bible School director for
many years. Member of the Sweetwater High School Class of 1927,
attended Hiwassee College and graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan
College in 1963. Born November 27, 1909, in Sevier County, daughter
of the late David Marshall Romine (who died in 1931) and Carrie
Hill
Romine (who died in 1953) of Sweetwater. Preceded in death by
husband of 36 years, Alton Hicks (who died in 1976); older son, David
Franklin Hicks (who died August 7, 1997); brother, Thornton D. Romine
of Sweetwater (who died in 1962). While she was physically in Virginia
for about five years, her heart never left Tennessee. All who knew her
remarked how sweet and cooperative she was, yet after her father died
in 1931, she held her family together by being the family's wage earner,
and a made a life for her husband and sons while working full-time. She
was a tough and gracious lady. Survivors: son and daughters-in-law, Sam
A. and RuthAnn L. Hicks, Blacksburg, Va., Joan B. Hicks, Birmingham,
Ala.; grandchildren, Beth Hicks Eads and husband Bryan Eads, Susane
Hicks, all of Birmingham, Ala., James S. and wife Heather Keefe Hicks,
Chattanooga, Charlotte R. Hicks, Blacksburg, Va.; great-grandsons,
Taylor and Mason Eads, both of Birmingham, Ala.; sister, Beulah Carter
Allen, Waycross, Ga. Funeral 3 p.m. Tuesday, Biereley-Hale Chapel,
Dr. Lon Shoopman, Rev. John E. Pennington officiating. Interment in
Sunset Cemetery. Family requests memorial contributions to the Blanche
R. Hicks Scholarship Fund, attn.: Mr. McDaniel, Sequoyah High School,
3128 Hwy. 411 N., Madisonville, TN. The family will receive friends 1-3
p.m. Tuesday at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville.
