Llewellyn M. BEEN was born 12 March 1849 to Hazzard BEAN/BEEN and Martha OSBORN in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. Indeed, the 1850 Census for this county, lists Llewellyn as being one year old. It is assumed that Llewellyn and his family-of-origin lived in Tallahatchie county until 14 December 1852, at which time his parents sold their land there.
By 01 March 1853, Llewellyn and his family had made their way to Sebastian County, Arkansas, where his father homesteaded 200 acres of land over the next several years. The U.S. Census reports for 1860 establishes that Llewellyn (then 11 years of age), his parents, and siblings were living in Center Township, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
Llewellyn married Sarah Permelia BROWN on 4 January 1872 . Sarah Permelia was born in North Carolina on 1 August 1847 to Henry BROWN and “Mary O.” Information on Llewellyn’s military history and on how the couple met has not been available.
We have been able to establish from the U.S. Census records (1880 and 1900 ) that Llewellyn and Sarah Permelia lived in Bates township, Sebastian County, Arkansas. And, by the time of the 1900 Census, they had given birth to eleven children. We have learned of ten: Minnie Joanna BEEN, Calvin BEEN, Jessey T. BEEN, Martin Thaddeus BEEN, Emma Matilda BEEN, Mary E. BEEN, Melissa E. BEEN, Mallie C. BEEN, Susie E. BEEN, and Lloyd BEEN.
It has been assumed that Llewellyn BEEN and Sarah Permelia BROWN lived together on their land until 15 December 1924, when Llewellyn died. He was 75 years of age. Sarah Permelia died three-and-a-half years later on 30 May 1928. She was 80. They are buried beside one another in Liberty Cemetery, Greenwood, Arkansas.
