Sydney's Page

G'day Mates,

I'm Sydney Dundee and I am a Sugar Glider. For those of you unfamiliar with my species, let me tell you a little about myself.

My ancestors are native to Australia and we are relatively new to the United States. I don't mean to brag, but we are considered exotic pets. We have even been referred to as the "Designer Pet of the '90s". This is getting pretty complicated but I am a nocturnal marsupial. Wow, what a mouthful! Since I am a male, I don't have a pouch like my mommy did. I resemble a flying squirrel and if I was in the outback, I could glide up to 45 meters because of my gliding membranes. Back to me personally.

I live in a relatively big cage with lots of tree branches to climb and plenty of toys to play with. One of my favorites is a little man kind of like a miniature "weeble-wobble" that I usually put in my pellet bowl when I'm finished playing with him. I also favor my cat toy mouse "Sheila" and sometimes take her in my pouch. I sleep in a velvet pouch all day and show my cute little face about 11 o'clock at night when I'm ready to come out to play and eat. My dad bought me a red light so mom and dad can see me but its still dark enough for my comfort. He got the idea from being around boats all his life. When I was a baby, my mom fed me formula from a tiny baby bottle that I even learned to hold by myself. My big black eyes and shiny ears really make me cute. If I get scared, I can make a really strange noise called charring. When I don't think I'm getting the attention I deserve, I bark, just like my sister Amanda. I do a few tricks on command and truly like to be handled. Mom usually takes me out at night and dad gets me out in the morning before it gets very light. (He has to get up early to go to work and I'm always waiting for him when he comes in my room for me). I don't like bright light very much, its kind of hard on my sensitive eyes, so if mom takes me out of my pouch during the day, I crawl down her blouse or go in her pocket. My folks found me at a bird show and just couldn't resist how adorable I was, so they took me home with them. I sure am glad they did because I have a great home and lots of wonderful siblings (even if most of them are feathered). Bye-bye for now.

Dad's having a hard time getting

a good picture of me but here I am.
