Gymnastics Meet Information
Our League The North Canton YMCA competes in the Northeast Ohio YMCA League. This league includes the following teams—Akron Firestone, Alliance, Ashland, Dalton, Euclid, Geauga, Lake County West, Louisville, Riverfront, Tuscarawas, and Wooster. We usually have 5 to 7 League meets with 2 to 4 teams in a meet. We do not necessarily meet with all teams in the League in a season.
Types of Meets Most of our meets are dual meets but some may have 3 or 4 teams. Usually, half of the meets are home, half are away. Occasionally, we schedule an outside meet. Divisional and Zone championships are held at the end of the season. At times, team members have the option of competing in the National YMCA championships, depending on the location of the hosting team. Anyone who qualifies is eligible but not required to compete. Nationals is for Levels 5 through 9. Level 4’s do not compete in Districts, Zones or Nationals.
Participation All team members will compete all-around unless for some reason they are not able to do an event safely (due to injury, lack of skill readiness, or lack of memorization of routines).
Transportation You are expected to drive your daughter to away meets yourself or arrange a carpool.
Scheduling and Duration The meet season begins in late October or early November and ends in April. One to two meets per month (approximately 5 to 7 meets total) and 2-3 invitational meets are common. All team members will also compete in the District meet and qualifying gymnasts (level 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) compete in the Zone meet(s) at the end of the season.
Meets are usually held on Saturday mornings, or early to late that afternoon, depending on the YMCA. Each of our meets will be a 2 session meet, due to the large size of our team. Our home meets warm-ups will begin an hour and half to two hours before the meet start time. Each session of the meet will take 2.5 to 3 hours. We will split all meets. Home meets will usually have the compulsory levels (4 & 5) competing in the first session. Level 6, 7, 8, and 9’s will typically be in the late afternoon session and will compete a modified capital cup format.
Awards Girls are required to stay and remain in gymnastics clothes for awards. Leaving before awards must be okayed with Colleen, and the gymnast must be responsible enough to ask a teammate to get her awards for her. Ribbons are given in each age group, on each event, and in each level. First through sixth places and all ties are honored at our home meets. At some away meets, the awards are done differently, with further division of age groups. Invitational meets often award the top twelve places and give trophies or medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. The YMCA District Meet also has age group team and overall level team awards.
The YMCA system uses the following age groups for awards. Age is determined by the gymnast’s age on December 1st of the season.
Cadet—–6 to 10 years Preps—11 and 12 years Junior —13 and 14 years Seniors—15 years and over
For example, if a gymnast turns 13 on Dec. 2nd, she competes as a prep the entire season because she was 12 on the cut-off date.
Judges We use rated officials to judge, one per event, and they are expensive. Prior to the start of the season, each team member pays her share of judges’ costs for the meets, league and zone registration fees, and award costs. This fee is due at the end of September. Families with more than one gymnast or with financial hardships may split the fee into 2 payments—due in September and January. |
