Level 4 and Novice 5
Level 4’s have their own practices so we can really focus on correct basics. Novice Level 5’s practice with our more experienced Level 5’s and with the Level 6’s. This year our Level 4’s and Novice Level 5’s will be in the first meet of the season. They also will have separate Invitational Meets in the fall. After this upcoming season, we will select new Level 5 gymnasts from our current Level 4 team. New Level 4 gymnasts will be selected from the Y’s pre-team program. Level 4 and Novice 5 team parents will be included in all Booster Club activities (fundraising and meet operation), and are encouraged to join the Booster Board if positions are open. Level 4 and Novice 5 gymnasts participate in all league meets, the Spring Show, and also attend the team banquet at the end of the season (mid-May). At this time Level 4’s do not participate in the YMCA District Meet and the YMCA Zone Meet. Novice Level 5’s, however, do participate in the District Meet and in the Zone Meet if they get qualifying scores.

Level 7
An optional level, level 7 is for first-year optionals Requirements for this level are similar to level 8, but they are a little easier. It is a training and developmental level for new optional gymnasts. This level specifies certain skills that must be performed such as a back layout on floor and a front handspring front tuck. On beam, a single flight element is required. Bar requirements are very similar to Level 8 but only 2 “B” skills are required to the 4 “B” skills that are required for Level 8.

Level 7 is an excellent level to introduce a gymnast to optional competition. It has requirements that will build a better gymnast and a stronger level 8 in the future. Scoring for level 7 is expected to produce higher event and all-around scores than a beginning optional would get at level 8.

Practice Times
Please check the team calendar for proper days and times.

Missed Practices/Extra Practices
Team members are encouraged to make up missed practices, when possible. Make ups & extra practices may be done on most Fridays from 4-6 pm and on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 4-6 pm. Due to the size of the L7, L8, & L9 team practices, make-ups are discouraged on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. For other make-up or extra practice time options, please check with Colleen. If there is a conflict, we will work with you for a solution.

Dressing Rooms
Each team level has a designated dressing room. Pre-team has room closest to the mezzanine rest rooms; L5 & L6 have the middle room by the vending machines. L7, L8, & L9 have a new dressing room by the floor mat at the end of the vault runner. Girls may bring locks and use lockers upstairs. We, however, are not responsible if combinations get forgotten or keys lost. We also are not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Valuables should be left at home! All items brought to gym should have the gymnast’s name marked with permanent marker.

Attendance/Leaving Early/Arriving Late
Attendance is very important. Regular practice leads to better skill accomplishment and learning, better fitness and flexibility and confidence. Gymnastics is a very challenging sport and requires a lot of training. At the North Canton YMCA we try to offer a reasonable practice schedule to allow time for other activities. In our 6.5 to 7 hours of training per week we have a lot to do. We try to maximize the time and start on time. The beginning part of practice is used for warm-up, important drills, and team announcements. Team members are expected to be at the entire practice. Leaving early will be permitted if there is a note from a parent or speaking with the coach in charge to clearly explain the reason. Coming late and leaving early only hurts the gymnast.
