The Gray Family

This family of Grays came to the United States from Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Very little is known about this family and research, of course, hasn't yet begun.
We've been unable to learn the progenitor father's first name however we do know his wife's maiden name was Margaret Knox.

Mr. Gray and Margaret had 10 daughters: Margaret, Nancy, Sarah, Letitia, Elizabeth, Jane, Maria, Rebecca, Martha, and Charlotte. Margaret and Nancy remained in Ireland since they were already married when the family set sail for the United States in 1822.

Jane, the sixth daughter, is my G-g-g-grandmother. She wrote this small passage about the family's trip from Ireland:

"We sailed from Newport Port in Ireland for Quebec on the 17th of May 1822 and landed on the 4th of July (Quebec) and landed in New York on the 24th (of July) and then we landed in Charleston on the 14th of November and then we came to Abbeville about the middle of April 1823. It is easier conceived than described that we suffered in body and mind since we left home."

Jane married Jeremiah Barnett McWhorter on January 24, 1833 and stayed in Pickens County until the day she died (February 15, 1844).
