Jean Powers Comments: Here's the story: George was born Dec 17 1872 and died January 30, 1930. He married Attie Harshbarger in Argentine, Wyandotte, Kansas on June 3, 1903. They moved around quite a bit - Missouri, Kansas, finally Illinois. In the 1920 Sanganmon Co. IL census, he says he was born in Illinois and his parents were born in North Carolina. The story is that his mother's name was Sarah Lyall. We do not know her husband's name. Apparently he abandoned her when George was a toddler. She gave him to a family named Powers, and he took their last name but was never formally adopted. When Attie died we found these pictures. On the back of the woman alone it says: Dortha Lyall. On the back of the family group, it says George's Grandmother's family. There is one more that is a picture of the young couple seated with the baby in the family picture. That picture has a photographer's name: Mathis, New Cambria, Missouri. The back of that picture says: "George's Aunt and Uncle." Unfortunately this is all the information we have.
