As far as I am aware the Lyall's are a Sept of the Clan Sinclair (from the French St Clair) who had / have extensive lands in Northern Scotland (Sutherland etc). I have heard that they had Norman origins (mixed with the Gaels, Vikings, Picts, Romans, English, Flemish, etc, etc, as usual). I know for a fact that there are many, many Lyall's buried in the graveyard at Macduff on the North Buchan coast about 50 miles North of Aberdeen. During the Highland Clearances whilst many people went abroad many also went to the Scottish coastal villages and settled there. On the Buchan coast they became involved in the Herring Industry (The Silver Darlings as written about by Neil Gunn) and from looking in the graveyard at Macduff they either died during childbirth, in infancy of disease, drowned at sea or lived to a ripe old age.
