The William and Mary (Haggerty)Thaxton Family Data
This information has been compiled from data furnished by
Family members and Thaxton researchers Betty and Karra Porter.

From Wayne:
descendant of William Thaxton, ggrandson of Flora Bell Thaxton, I am given the birthdate of William as Feb. 29th 1832. Wayne, told me he acquired this information from a son of Flora Bell Thaxton and/or another direct descendant of William and Meary Thaxton. Sonnie, a grandson of Leona May Thaxton.

Wayne also tells me Meary Ann was born in Ireland and came here at the age of 7. Wayne's information at this date has her birthdate unkn, and a death date of Jan 01, year unk Wayne and other family members are continuing research on the family of William Thaxton and Meary/Mary Ann Haggerty, Thaxton.

From Agatha,
a granddaughter of Mary Catherine Thaxton. Information given to her by other family members. Father:UNK Mother:UNK

William Thaxton m.Marriage: MEARY ANN HAGHERITY/Hatterty/Heggerty: daughter of PETER HAGHERITY/Haggerty/Heggerty and MEARY ANN.

From Betty Porter, a Thaxton Researcher bporter@vii.com

at this date July 27, 1998 her research sent to me is showing. William born Feb. 1848 in Tennessee and married Mary Ann Heggerty was the son of James, born between 1800 and 1810, death between 1840 and 1850 in Smith/Jackson Co. TN. and the wife of James is Cynthia.

From Karra Porter, a Thaxton Researcher shewho@vii.com

Karra sent me the following information. This information is what she had on hand and or speculated to be the truth.

The information below points to origins in Jackson Co., Tennessee. Karra at this time was working on the Theory that William Thaxton of Pope County - and at least 3 others there - were children of Cynthia Thaxton of Jackson Co., Tennessee, who may have been the widow of James Thaxton.

William Thaxton ca 1848-? Married Mary Ann Haggerty, and settled in Hardin & Pope Counties, Illinois.

Possible siblings are:

Some of these records of Karra Porter's are from original records and some are from transcripts.

1850 Census of Jackson County, Tennessee

550/550 Cyntha Thaxton - age 35 - born, Tennessee

[Note: Obviously, William is not named in this entry. The 1900 census suggest a birth date of Feb. 1848 for William; birth records of hid children suggest 1849. Cynthia could not be located in the 1860 census which would have helped resolve this issue.

Pope County, Illinois, Monroe Precinct" Census records 1880

164/166 Thaxton, William w, m, age 32, married, farmer, TN TN TN
Mary Ann, w, f, 28, wife, married, keeping house, PA PA PA
Mary C., w, f, 4 dau, single IL TN PA
Leona, w, f, 2, dau, single, IL TN PA
Flora Bell, w, f, 3/12(born in March), dau, single, IL TN PA

To read the above paragraph, if you are confused. William's self, father and mother were born in Tennessee. Mary Ann's, self, father and mother were born in PA

Mary C., born Illinois, father born Tennessee, mother born PA.

I believe this to be the census records for my grandmother Mary Catherine Thaxton, who was born March 26, 1876 and would have been four years old at the time of the 1880 census.

Also, the siblings of Leona and Flora Bell as well as the parents William and Mary Ann, compare to all the records on hand regarding my grandmother.

Copy Of Original Birth Records

Thackston, Laura, 14 Feb. 1878, Monroe Precinct. 4th child of mother.
Father: William, 28, farmer, born Tenn. Mother: Maryan Hagerty, 26.

Thaxston, Flora B., 30 Mar 1880, Monroe Precinct. 4th [sic] child of
mother. Father: Wm, 30, farmer, born Tenn. Mother: Mary A. Heggerty,
28, born Penn.

{comment: each of the above children appear to be from the same parents. quite possibly so. I have no other records of a child name Laura, But Leona May was born on Feb. 14 1878, to the parents of William Thaxton and Mary Ann Haggerty. My record of this information is from Flora Bell's son.}

[note: Thaxston,Thackston or Thaxton, I believe both to be the same. My father told me his mothers name was spelled Thaxston. Other family members spell it Thaxton. I believe due to the sounding of this name, it will often be misspelled or have two or more ways of being spelled.

Also the name Haggerty, I have observed the records sent to me having several different ways of spelling Haggerty. Including Mary Catherine's marriage license. The recorder spelled the name Hoggerty. I have found these variations, Haggerty-Hagerty - Heggerty - Hoggerty -Hagargey - Hegarter]

Cemetery Records

p. 109. Thaxston Cemetery, T 12 South Range 7 East Section 15.
"Enumerated July 29, 1989. This is a big cemetery. It appears to have
an old and new section. The only commercial stones are in the back
section. There are 100-150 burials." Only stones mentioned:

Thaxston, Mary A., wife of William Thaxston
b. Aug. 2, 1852; d. Jan. 27, 1903

Maggie, dau. of M. A. and William Thaxston
b. Aug. 28, 1884; d. Sept. 21, 1902

Thaxston, Nora
b. May 27, 1889; d. Jan. 27, 1900

[note my records show a, Nora Ellen b. May 19, 1888. I never heard of Maggie and Nora, as they did not live to be grown is probably the reason. But, they are named in the information handed to me by Agatha Sedrick, a family member.]

Note of Karra Porter [Note: There is a brief obituary for Nora Thaxston written by her mother
in a book called Hardin County [Illinois] Obits & Tidbits. I can't seem
to lay my hands on it at the moment, but will try to locate it.]

More from Karra Porter [We admittedly don't have much information to support our theory that
Cyntha was the widow of James Thaxton. Essentially, we're basing it on
the following: James is the only unaccounted for Thaxton in the
Jackson/Smith Co., Tenn., area, during the 1830s and '40s. (He appears
in nearby Smith Co. land records in the 1830s and 40s, and in the 1840
Jackson Co. census.) James does not appear in the 1850 census, and the
ages of his wife and children appear consistent with Cyntha, who does
appear. If we can get our hands on a death certificate or other record
of a child with parents' names, it'll help. No such luck yet.]
