Amite County Courthouse Tour
- Chancery Clerk's Office
This is a photograph of the reception area of
the Chancery Clerk's office. It is in the east side of the original
courthouse building and the office contains one of the two fireplaces.
These are no longer used, but they do remind the visitor of the days before
central heating. Because of the extreme fire hazard, this fireplace
hasn't been used for decades. The open doorway shown leads to the room
where the probate files are contained. More offices and the room
with land records are beyond.
Although its hard to see in
this image, the photograph hung over the mantlepiece is a beautiful graphic
of the courthouse at dusk. The photograph below it in the center
of the fireplace is a photograph of the courthouse taken at the turn of
the century--only the middle section was extant then and it did not yet
have the columns and balconies.
