A special thanks to Wayne Hurte, who is the Chief of the Legislature Police. Wayne provided lots of information for this page, and was kind enough to send two of the patches you see on this page.
Most people do not realize that the state of Nevada has a Legislative Police Department. Most people think that this agency is the Capitol Police, when in fact they are not. The Capitol police work under the wing of the Nevada Highway Patrol. The Legislative Police work only for the Legislature.
The Legislature Police has nine full time officers year around, and three part-time officers. When the Legislature is in session, that number blossoms to 24 officers. Almost all of the officers are retired from other agencies, or have extensive law enforcement backgrounds. The officers that are added during session are selected based on those types of backgrounds.
Working with the legislatures is in itself a real challenge and the agency has to ensure that the people they hire are able to adjust to the Legislative egos!
This is an older patch I have. From looking at it, I would almost have to say the before the agency became a sworn one, it was a security force. I am sure that when Wayne reads this he will set me straight! | ![]() |
On the next row are two patches which are similar. The one on the far left is one that I had, and the one in the center is the one that Wayne sent me. Below is a National |

As you can see, these two patches are very similar. The one on the left is one Wayne sent me, which is the current patch, and the one on the right is probably an older version. | This is the National Legislative Services and Security Association patch. I don't think the Legislative Police wear these as part of their uniforms. |
