Drivers' Ed Refresher
Driving is a part of most of our daily routine. To brush up on your driving skills, here are some general tips to help you drive safely.
- Scan the road ahead and check mirrors often for the road behind to help you recognize and avoid hazards
- Try to anticipate other drivers and situations ahead of you and act appropriately before it's too late.
- Show your intentions by signaling. Turn on your turn signal about a block before you intend to make the turn.
- Slow down when you approach an intersectoin or at least have your foot on the brake. Don't assume that other drivers will give you the right-of-way.
- Allow at least 2 seconds of distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Add a second for each of the following conditions:
- Driving at night or in rain, fog, snow.
- Driving behind a truck or vehicle making it difficult for you to see ahead of you.
- Driving behind a motorcycle
- Driving through an intersection
- Don't drive in a vehicles blind spot. If you can't see your vehicle in the side mirror of the other vehicle, your vehicle is in their blind spot.
The heavier the car, the longer it takes to stop. Anti-lock brakes or ABS do not decrease your stopping distance. They only help you stop without skidding.
