Death of Ambrose Curtiss

Ambrose Curtiss, one of the oldest native born residents of this town, died at the residence of his son, B.A. Curtiss, in this village, last Friday morning, and the funeral was attended from the house at 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, Rev. E. Curtis officiating.

Mr. Curtiss was born four years after the town was organized, and was consequently identified with its early history. The first forty-six years of his life were spent on a farm on the Seventh. From 1849 to the failure of the banking house of A. Curtiss & Carman, in 1876, he was a prominent business man in our town, first as a merchant, and subsequently as banker. He was also, during the active years of his life, prominent in the civil affairs of the town, and frequently held offices of trust and responsibility.

His father, Deacon Ambrose Curtiss, was one of the founders and an honored officer of the Congregational church in this village. For over fifty years the deceased was a member of the same church. For many years he was a trustee of the society, and as such to him, with others, was given the task of building the new church. His life carries us back to the time when only a house or two, in the midst of fields and woods, represented what is now the town of Camden.

During the last five years of his life Mr. Curtiss was afflicted with what is familiarly called the shaking palsy. For four years of that time he was confined to the house, and during the past two years his infirmities have been very great, and such as to tax to the utmost the sympathies and care of the family. Through it all, however, there has been patient and tender attention. The deceased leaves a wife; four daughters and a son.

CURTISS -- In this village, November 5, 1880, Ambrose Curtiss, aged 78 years.
