F. Lynn Eggan, 75, of 308 W. Oak St., died Wednesday in Rome Hospital after a long illness.
For 41 years, Mr. Eggan was physical education director in the Rome YMCA, retiring in September, 1968. Before asuming the Rome post on Sept. 1, 1927, he served for two years as assistant in the physical education department at the Baltimore, Md., YMCA.
His work with the Rome YMCA began as a pupil at Rome Free Academy, working part-time under J.B. Wilbur, who was then executive secretary. Mr. Eggan was the first president of the RFA Hi-Y Club, and while a college student, he worked with Springfield and Holyoke, Mass., boys' clubs.
For many years he was in charge of the American Red Cross water safety and first aid program courses in Rome. He began teaching swimming in 1915 while serving on the city Recreation Department staff.
In 1953, Mr. Eggan was honored by state YMCA officials for more than 25 years of professional service. He was also the recipient of the Red Cross "Service to Humanities" award. Five consecutive years of 100 hours of service are required for eligibility for the award, and Eggan served more than 100 hours per year for his full 41 years of employment at the Rome YMCA.
In March, 1965, he was presented with the George R. Staley Athletic Association "Citizen of the Year" award.
Mr. Eggan was a member of the First Baptist Church and had served as superintendent of its Sunday School for 30 years. He was a member of the Rome Lodge of Elks, and a former member of both the Rome Rotary and the Izaak Walton League.
He was born on March 7, 1900, in Rome, son of David and Ella Jane Armstrong Eggan. He was graduated from Rome Free Academy and Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. On June 5, 1928, he married Edna A. Herrmann in Baltimore. She died Nov. 16, 1961.
Mr. Eggan leaves a daughter, Mrs. Hugh E. (Charlotte) Philipp, Rome; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur W. (Pauline) Payne and Mrs. John A. (Dorothy) Robinson, both of Rome; a brother, John D. Eggan Sr., Rome and two granddaughters, Sharon Philipp and Catherine Philipp, both of Rome.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Strong Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery.
Calling hours are Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Tower Fund of the First Baptist Church.
