REDFIELD

Dec. 18 -- There is always a mystery attendant upon God's Dealings with us in the removal of our
friends by the hand of death. Especially is this the case when we are called to mourn the loss of
the young, the good and the beautiful, when the maiden, just entering upon the years of womanhood, is
suddenly taken from us and her young form laid in the silent tomb. Happy at such a time are they who
can look to a bright beyond, both for the loved one gone and for their own grieved hearts. Such is
the case in the death of our young friend, Katie, who departed this life in Redfield Dec. 10, 1883, at
the early age of 19 years and 5 months. Our earliest recollection of her is a bright little girl, merry
and fun loving, yet ever yielding a willing obedience to parents or friends. She dearly loved all
that was beautiful in life and her loving heart always found friends everywhere, and with the poet,

None knew her but to love her,
None named but to praise.

Her funeral was one of the largest ever held in this place, which again shows the warm affection for
her, and as another proof that her loving disposition was appreciated there were many floral tokens,
fit emblems of her pure young life so soon faded and gone. May her memory in our hearts live on making
us kinder, truer, and better for having known her, and may we follow her to a better land.

At a meeting of the committee appointed by the Presbyterian Sunday school the following preamble and
resolutions were adopted:

Whereas, By the disposition of Divine Providence our beloved sister and schoolmate Katie Lock has been
removed from our school by death now therefore be it.

Resolved, That we extend to the family of deceased our sincere sympathy in this bereavement and our
loss, hoping that God in his infinite mercy will sanctify this affection to the family and our eternal
gain, be it further.

Resolved, That we the Presbyterian Sabbath school present to the family of our honored Katie, who has
gone, our high regard of her as a helpmeet and worker in the Sabbath school.

Resolved, That for the period of thirty days her seat be draped in mourning and that these resolutions
be spread on the minutes of our school and a copy be furnished the family of our lamented Katie and be
forward for publications.
