The Union


1. Luddington, Hisler H. - Know ye, that Heisler H. Luddington- Private of Captain Thomas J. McKilben Company (06) 25th Regiment of Illiois Infantry volunteers who was enrolled on the first day of June, One thousand eight hundred and sixty-one to serve three years of during the war, is hereby discharged from the service of the United States, the 5th day of September, 1864, at Springfield, Illinois by reason of expiration of term of service. (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.) Said Heisler H. Luddington was born in Warren County in the State of Ohio, is 18 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and by occupation, when enrolled, a farmer. Given at Springfield, this 5 day of September, 1964.

2. Ludington, James S. - Joined the army on 1 October 1861 at Camp Dennison, Cincinatti, Ohio. Residence at time of enlistment: Morton, Warren County, Ohio. Died of pneumonia at Nashville General Field Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee 9 March 1864. Grave located at 473 section C. James was 5 ft. 8 in. high, dark complexion, grey eyes, brown hair and by trade was a worker in a saw mill. Age 22 at enlistment, age 27 when he died three years later.??

3. Luddington, Milton - On the 7th day of August, 1862, Milton was enlisted by Captain G. F. H. Purdy of the 77th Regiment of Indiana, 4th Calvary at Terre Houte, Indiana. He was at the time 33 years old, 6ft 1/2 inches, light complexion, dark eyes, dark hair and by occupation was a farmer. He received a disability discharge 23 April 1863 at Mumfordsville, Ky. by order of General Wright for consumption. While in the service and in the line of his duty at Mumfordsville, in the State of Kentucky he contracted measles and an infection of the heart and lungs. Milton applied for pension on September 11, 1880, age 51. He was living in Conologue, Edgar County, Illinois.

4. Ludington, Comfort B.: Comfort was 25 when he was inducted on 17 November, 1862 into the Minnesota 8th Regimental Infantry. This unit was called "Ohio". Comfort was living in Summitt, Filmore County, Minnesota. Comfort was killed by the indians on 2 May 1863 at Pomme de Terre, Minnesota in what is know locally as the Souix Uprising. This occured in August and September of 1862 and the end result was the largest mass hanging in United States History.

5. Luddington, Harrison: Harrison was age 22 when entering the service on April 22, 1861. He had 3 months of service and Mustered out with the company on August 22, 1861.

6. Luddington, George A.: Enlisted in the Union Army on 13 September 1861 at the age of 18. He Mustered out on 13 August 1865.

7. Luddington, Henry: Enlisted in the Union Army on 27 September 1864 at the age of 40. He served in the 51st Ohio Infantry and mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on 20 June 1865.

8. Luddington, Charles C.: Enlisted in the 30th Ohio Infantry regiment on 21 August 1861. He mustered out at Georgia on 29 August 1864.


The Confederacy



1. Ludington, James Cavendish: James volunteered for the Confederate Army when he was about 18 years of age and was in camp only one day when he was captured and taken to Camp Chase in Ohio where he remained a prisoner of war for about a year, or until the end of the war.

2. Luddington, William A.: Appointed 1st Corporal of Company C, 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry (Olmstead's), May 30, 1861. Roll dated June 30, 1861, shows him present. No record of discharge found. Enlisted as a private in Company B, 8th Regiment georgia Infantry on Augst 19, 1861. Transferred to C. S. Navy in 1863. Appointed 3rd Assistant Engineer on July 4, 1863; 3rd assistant Engineer in Provisional Navy on June 2, 1864. Served on C.S.S. Resolute - 1863/1864; on C.S.S. Torch - 1864.



World War II

1. Ludington, James Kenneth - James joined the Marine Corps Reserves on 8/10/1940 at Covington, Virginia. Transferred to active duty on 11/7/1940. James was discharged with the rank of Sergeant at Dahlgren, Virginia in January of 1947

Korean Conflict


1. Jones, Frederick LeRoy(Son of Verona Ludington): Served in the Korean War from 1952 till the end of the war in 1953. Fred was a Quartermaster and Signalman in Amphibious Squadron Three aboard the USS Balduck (APD-132), USS George Clymer (APA-32) and USS Bayfield (APA - 33)until his discharge in Dec. 1960. Fred completed 4 WESTPAC tours.

Vietnam War


1. Ludington, James N.: Served in the US Navy from Sept. 19, 1963 to June 1, 1967 as a Radioman. Separated as Radioman 3rd Class (RM3). Served on board the USS Oriskany (CVA-34) for three years, including 2 tours of duty in Vietnam (WESTPAC) tours.

2. Kenneth Randall Ludington: Served in the US Navy from Aug 66 to Feb 71. Attended "A" school at Pensacola, Florida then served at Subic Bay, Phillipines and in Germany.
