John Jones was born in Ireland in March of 1802. John came to Smiths Falls, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada as a 2nd Corporal in the Queens Engineers, Sappers and Miners, 15th Company to work on the Rideau Canal System. John met a young lass named Maria Phillips and they were married 9 April, 1834 in Smiths Falls. John and Maria had 11 children, 9 boys (William, George, John, Ormond, James, Arthur, Charles, Thomas and Patrick)and 2 daughters (Mabel G and Elizabeth Ann). John was appointed the first lockmaster of Old Slys by Colonel By and also served as Lockmaster of the Detached Locks in Smiths Falls. His sons Arthur, James and John also served as lockmasters on the Detached Locks. His sons and daughters remained in Lanark County with the exception of James who moved to Chicago, USA, George who moved to Wisconsin and joined the Union Army during the American Civil War, Ormond who moved to Plattsburg, New York, USA and daughter Margaret who moved to British Columbia with her husband.
