Schuyler Colfax Tombstone Restoration Project

In September of 2007, newly-elected Schuyler Colfax Chapter Vice Regent, Carol Nichols, wondered about the man for whom the chapter is named. She found his tombstone in the South Bend City Cemetery.

The tombstone was in need of a new top piece and the base needed repair. It was evident that restoration of the tombstone was essential.

The South Bend Center for History was hosting a cemetery tour of the City Cemetery in October. By working with Travis Childs, Director of School Programs, Center for History; Amy Herdman, Assistant Director, Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County; and the South Bend Tribune, the cemetery tour was covered with special emphasis on the tombstone restoration project.

With the approval of the executive board of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter, NSDAR, work on Phase I began in earnest. Interest in the project grew and donations have been received. Carol investigated the possibility of applying for grant money, and wrote to governmental officials telling them of the chapter's intent, asking if they would like to participate. Amy Herdman suggested getting City Cemetery on the National Register of Historic Sites; she has obtained a nomination, has been working diligently to complete the necessary forms, and is seeking local landmark status for both Schuyler Colfax's monument and City Cemetery.

Chicora Foundation, a renowned historic preservation foundation, will meet with the executive board of the Schuyler Colfax Chapter, the Historic Preservation Commission, the Center for History, and other officials to tour the cemetery. Chicora will submit a detailed plan to repair/restore the Schuyler Colfax tombstone and to renovate the City Cemetery as well. After the initial meeting, Chicora will make a public presentation at the St. Joseph County Library in downtown South Bend on November 13, 2007, at 6:00 p.m.

In Phase II, the chapter and the Historic Preservation Commission will be applying for grants to help defray the cost of the tombstone restoration. The chapter will also be seeking private donations.
