The chapter supports and encourages education and the study of American History in local schools by annually conducting essay contests from grades 5 through 12. An average of fifty medals a year are presented to the outstanding essayists. |

We also encourage good citizenship by presenting awards to one representative Senior from each high school in the area who best demonstrates the qualities of a good citizen, dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. |
|
|
The chapter contributes to the St. Joseph County Scholarship Fund as well as numerous DAR scholarship funds. We also award a chapter scholarship on the local level. |
|
|
The chapter supports the St. Joseph County Literacy Council including tutor training for the Council. |
|
|
The chapter is involved in remembering and contacting our veteran patients who are residents in local facilities as well as the Indiana State Veterans Home in Marion, Indiana. |
|
|
The chapter provides study manuals for those immigrants wishing to become American citizens. We attend all naturalization ceremonies and personally congratulate each candidate for citizenship. Flag code pamphlets which describe the correct usage and display of the American flag are presented to each candidate courtesy of the chapter. |

|
The chapter also actively supports preserving the history and marking historic sites of the area. |

Schuyler Colfax Chapter Memorial Scholarship
The Schuyler Colfax Chapter Memorial Scholarship is funded by donations from chapter members. This is in addition to the Chapter Scholarship allowing us to present at least two scholarships every year. These one-time only awards in the amount of $200.00 are given annually to St. Joseph County area students who have successfully applied for one of the scholarships offered by the NSDAR at the national level. These scholarships are offered in specific areas, to both high school seniors and current undergraduates. Applications must be completed in January. the Lobby on the 3rd floor. Please join us for the Celebration of
our country's great Constitution and the valiant efforts of all those who gave us this Constitutional document and for those today, who continue to honor, protect and preserve our document. |
