From: Sharon Torrison Sharon Torrison
Assistant to the Dean for Student Affairs
Subject: Reference for Cameron Macht
For many years, I have been responsible for administering advising services for the students within the School of Business and Economics, and I have the opportunity to interact with many different students directly as part of that role. Cameron Macht is a student with whom I have had regular contact in an advising capacity; he stands out as a particularly responsible and motivated student. Since his entry to college, he has had many interests and multiple goals and has sought out opportunities to prepare himself to reach those goals.
Cameron typically initiated advisement meetings, using the resources of my office as well as initiating effective contacts with faculty members. While he is always organized in his planning and has very sound ideas as to the courses and activities which best support his goals, he is also receptive to other perspectives and suggestions. Discussions with Cameron are thoughtful and productive; it is clear that he considers our input and then makes decisions which lead to constructive actions. He chose to go beyond minimal degree requirements by adding two minors to his basic business program, with a major in management.
While Cameron has taken his academic course work seriously and definitely works to master the material, he seeks to learn in a multitude of ways. He has selected courses which challenge him by their content and which will push him to continue developing effective skills, such as in writing, speaking and analysis. Beyond the classroom, Cameron has involved himself in productive activity, such as in his work with the college newspaper, the UMD Statesman. He also sought out an internship with the Northspan Group, Inc., so that he could integrate many of his other experiences and knowledge in a more business-like setting. From this, he developed his knowledge and skills even further.
In all of my meetings with Cameron, he has been pleasant and friendly. He has good interpersonal skills and assumes his responsibilities in a relationship readily, leaving me always with an impression of him as a mature person. Although I have been emphasizing his more serious traits, I also note that he has a sense of humor and the capacity to enjoy what he is doing.
I strongly believe that Cameron will continue to be a capable, responsible, motivated, and productive person, a person who sets solid goals and learns the means to achieve them ethically. Additionally, I believe that he will continue to work effectively with other people and that he will be committed to making a contribution to any organization which he joins.
