MY FAMILY FROM 1916 TO .....

My grandfather, Leslie Charles Sholl, with my father, Wesley Russell Sholl, 1916, probably in Jersey City, New Jersey. Dad's first wagon. Grampa Sholl was a printer by trade and worked in Jersey.

My father, Wesley Russell Sholl, and my mother, Marjory Malcolm, August 6, 1934, at "Fred's Summer Home, Pennsylvania".   Back of picture reads (in my mother's handwriting):   "The four of us went down a hill, which was supposed to be a road.   Just as you see it here, without a horse!   Fred did the steering.   We nearly killed ourselves!" Mom was 16 years old.

Frank Purcell with unidentified maiden. Look at the shoulder strap on Frank's bathing suit. I believe this was the summer of 1934. Back of picture reads, in my mother's handwriting:  "Good Hue" Pool, West Brighten, S.I., NY; Frank P - W.B." Frank was a close friend of Dad's and Mom's for years, and I remember him. I believe I went to school with his son/s.

My mother, Marjory Malcolm Sholl, Fall, 1939, at our home, Amity Place (off Forest Avenue, close to where Weisglass Goldseal Dairy Corporation used to be, which was where I had my first job as a secretary and switchboard operator (PBX 555), in 1955 or 56), Mariners Harbor, Staten Island, NY. "Mickey", my sister, (Marjory Anne, later Mrs. William Louis Miller) is two years old and this may have been her birthday picture(September '37); Mom is pregnant with me (December '39). Mom was 22 years old here.

My mother, Marjory Malcolm Sholl, Summer, 1945, at our back yard, 103 Northfield Avenue, Staten Island, NY. Mom is wearing the sunsuit she made of white cotton pique and printed with blue daisys. She's holding her wire-haired fox terrier, "Sketchy" who was a gift from Dad.  In back of her is the Taylor home which faced Benjamin Place.  The Taylors kept chickens and I do remember beheaded chickens circling the chopping block.  Notice the solar clothes dryer.   Mom was 28 years old here.  Next to the Taylor's, on Benjamin Place lived Carl and Bertha Steinmeyer, and their daughter, Thelma. Carl Steinmeyer was a model train hobbyist and kept the most enthralling model railroad village in his workshop, where I was privileged to visit at any time. A delightful memory.

To your left is a picture of me, Joan Elaine Sholl, with my father, mother and sister: Wesley R. Sholl, Marjory Malcolm Sholl and Marjory Anne Sholl, taken June, 1953 at Mac Cormac Place, Mariners Harbor; occasion was my Graduation from P.S. 22, Staten Island, NYC. I'm wearing the dress I made, by hand (we were not allowed to use sewing machines in school), it was part of the requirement for graduation. I got "honorable mention" at graduation for the quality of my sewing. Edna J. Henry was my most beloved sewing teacher. I believe her husband was Superintendent of schools, and both of Mrs. Henry's daughters became teachers.
