Glory, starring Denzel Washington, is about the 54th Massachussetts Colored Infantry, a black unit, that served the Union Army in the Civil War. I immediately became interested in the movie when I saw the promotions because of its historical perspective. Prior to this movie, I had no idea that there were all black units that fought in the Civil War due to the fact that there were no mention of black Americans in history books when I attended school.
I liked the movie because of its portrayal of brave black men willing to fight for the Union to defeat the south and the institution of slavery. Most white Americans believed black men were not capable of military duty and would not perform well in battle. Because of stereotyped opinions, the men in the 54th met adversity and racism at every turn; but it did not erode their determination to engage in battle and prove their manhood. Their determination, along with the white officers who were commited to the cause, resulted in the 54th leading the battle for Fort Wagner in the summer of 1863. The bravery and military capability of these black men were shown in realistic battle scenes as they did battle with the Confederate soldiers at Fort Wagner.
