The Relief Society was founded by the Prophet Joseph Smith on March 17
1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois and is the oldest auxiliary organization in the
church. It is intended for all women ages 18 and older and for women
younger than 18 who are married.
The Relief Society serves under the guidance of the priesthood.
The purpose of Relief Society as stated by President Joseph F. Smith is
“not only to deal with the necessities of the poor, the sick and the needy,
but a part of its duty-and the larger part too- is to look after the spiritual
welfare and salvation of the mothers and daughters of Zion;”.
The following objectives of the Relief Society are taken from the Church
Handbook of Instructions:
1. Build faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and teach the doctrines of the
kingdom of God.
There are four areas within the Relief Society that help to accomplish
these objectives. They are:
1. Visiting Teaching
The Relief Society is the largest women’s organization in the world.
The motto of the Relief Society is “Charity never faileth” (1 Corinthians
13:8). All women are encouraged to attend Relief Society each Sunday
to strengthen their testimonies and cultivate a closer relationship with
Jesus Christ.
2. Emphasize the divine worth of each sister.
3. Exercise charity and nurture those in need.
4. Strengthen and protect families.
5. Serve and support each sister.
6. Help sisters become full participants in the blessings of the priesthood.
2. Welfare and Compassionate Service
3. Education
4. Homemaking
