"It is reported that Thomas took an active part in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. When the insurrection was suppressed, a squad of soldiers was observed at a distanxce approaching teh famikly home. Two guns were hastily dragged along the bottom a ditch by one of the children and cast into a pond that contained deep water. When the soldiers searched the house and found no implements of warfare they refrained from burning the premises or molesting the reidenmts who were women and children."
