The sept of O'Fogarty, in the Kingdom of Ormond (circa 1500) was of sufficient importance to give its name to a large territory in central Ireland which was known as Eliogarty i.e the southern part of Eile or Ely in the barony, in what is now Co. Tipperary.
It was in Eliogarty that the most ancient O'Fogarty Castle was located. It is reported that the castle was confiscated by the British in the 14th century and the Fogarty were turned out.
The more recent Fogarty Castle is located at Ballycahill, just outside of Thurles, Co. Tipperrary.
James Fogarty, our oldest irish Fogarty ancestor come from a little hamlet called Burgess near Nenagh, Co.Tipperrary.
