Dumont, New Jersey is where I was raised. By the time I was 5 years old, I was drawing - just as most five years old do. Because stones were free, that's what I decorated and these became my Christmas gifts to relatives. This was both my recreation and creation. And, even at the age of 80, it still is.
I studied art for 4 years in High School and graduated in 1936 as the Best Artist. In those days, people didn't have money and since I was no exception, there was no way to continue further art education. I was able to attend the Free W.P.A. Art Classes at night though.
I traveled into New York City and worked in the embroidery business until I was 24 years old and became the mother of Irene.
Again, I turned to my Art. Decorating and selling glassware, men's ties, and handkerchiefs allowed me to stay at home with my daughter until she graduated from High School in 1959.
Art Courses were being given in the local Adult School and I quickly signed up. I studied under Betty Lou Schlem, Margaret Ward and then Edgar Whitney. I also later studied at the Art Student's League in New York City.
In 1962 I exhibited at my First Art Show and Won an Award!!
I then taught Water Color for 4 years in the Adult School and exhibited in many shows.
My paintings are all over the world and I have one in the Nelson Rockerfellow Collection. In 1962 one of my paintings hung in the New York World's Fair.
I have received 132 Ribbons and have given demonstrations at Art Clubs.
At present, I am still a member of the Pascack Art Association. In the past, I have held membership in the American Artist Professional League, Ridgewood Art Association, Hackensack Art Club and the Miami Pallet Club.
I paint in both Oils and Water Colors and enjoy both.
My husband, Bill, has always been a supporter and helps me. He frames my paintings, puts up racks, carries the paintings, etc. We spent about 20 winters in Florida going to shows every weekend. Without Bill, I could not have managed. We met a lot of nice people and artists from all over the country.
Art has always been part of my lif. Between my family and Senior Activities (I teach craft class, too)I have a happy, full life and have never been bored or lonely. It has been a good life for a little kid from Dumont who had nothing but the love of a Paint Box. God gave me a gift and the good health to use it.
If, for some reason, I have not rotated pictures in awhile and you would like to see more, please, e-mail me.
