Pinkerton Trivia Page - Pinkerton Buttons

The Agency has used a number of different badges, buttons, patches, and pins over the years. Here is a selection of a few buttons:

Pinkerton Buttons

These buttons appears to be from the early days of the Agency when their primary work was as railroad detectives. On the front of the buttons are the words "PINKERTON RAIL ROAD DETECTIVE". The back of the buttons have the words "TIFFANY & CO" and "NEW YORK". Pinkerton Railroad Detective button

Collectors should be aware of fakes of the above buttons. These fakes were made in the 1970s and are readily available. The wording ont he fakes is identical to thaton the real ones.

I'm not sure if these are fakes, but if they are compared to the ones above, they look suspicious.

These buttons come in at least three sizes - the smallest for cuffs or shirt buttons, the middle size for jacket buttons, and the largest for overcoat buttons. They come in both silver and gold colours. They have the words "WATERBURY BUTTON CO." and "Conn" on the back.

It is noted that sometimes the face of the button rotates with respect to the mount. It is also noted that on the smallest size button, there are two mounting arrangement - either a loop and two stright pieces of wire approximately 3/4" long.

I have also noticed varying thicknesses of these buttons. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether some are fakes or older or ???

This button has the words "PINKERTONS" and "WATCH".

As seen by the inscription on the reverse, the buttons are made by Henry V. Allien % Co., New York.

The button is approximately one inch in diameter.

This button is similar to the one above, but has the words "PINKERTONS" and "PATROL".

The blue colour is a problem with the picture. I believe that the buttons are grey or gold.

The buttons are made by Henry V. Allien % Co., New York.

The button that appears blue is approximately 7/8 inch in diameter and 1/4 inch high. The other is apparently 9/16 inch in diameter.

After California Plant Protection purchased Pinkertons, a new button appears on the uniforms. You can see a CPP on this button.

This button is from a jacket with a "CPP/PINKERTON" badge of the sleeve.

This is an two-hole ivory (probably vegetable ivory) button with the single word "PINKERTON" on it. It also has three stars spaced around it.

The word "PINKERTON" is shown beside the button, as the inscription is not too clear on the scan.
