| Birth Story: Labor seemed to be coming and going and the doctor was a bit concerned that Echo's heart rate was dropping, so he decided to speed things up with some Cervadil. We had a very long labor, and almost ended up with a c-section, but just managed to avoid that. We did not, however, manage to avoid a long, grueling hospital stay. She was a pretty big girl, especially for me, but she was sooooo worth it. I thank God so much for her. She is so beautiful and such a blessing. I could not ask for anything more. |

| Birth Story: My water broke when I woke up on Nov 4th about 8:00am. Went to L&D and was admitted at about noon. I was given the gel to soften my cervix at 2:00pm. Contractions finally started and continued successfully. About 10:30pm I was completely D&E, but the Dr was 30 mins away. I finally started pushing just after 11:00pm and Erin arrived at 12:16am on the 5th. |

| Birth Story: I was induced at 10:30 AM and hardly felt any contraction until 2 PM. The baby'e heartrate went down for every contraction , so my doctor decided to break my water at 3 PM. Then, everything happened very fast, within one hour I was dilated and I had to push only twice and my beautiful baby boy was born. He is a wonderful baby, sleeping all night, and he can already smile at three weeks !!! I am SOO in love with him! |

| Birth Story: Well, first off let me say that I
had been having contractions off and on for 2 weeks. Started to lose
my plug in bits and pieces the week before. On Saturday afternoon,
I began contracting regularly. They got to 3 minutes apart lasting 60 seconds
or longer. I had to breathe through them, they were pretty strong, thought
for sure this was it. That evening I called my midwife just to put her
on alert and also called my doula to come over, thinking it was gonna be
a long night. I continued to contract through the night. My
dh set up the kiddy pool for me to labor in, it was wonderful the warm
water really helped with the contractions. Labor seemed well established
and I thought I was on my way to have a baby!! Well, about 3 a.m.
the contractions began to peter out........ugh! This isn't what I was expecting.............I
think it had a lot to do with the fact that I was really really tired.
Labor just shut down..........ugh!!! Anyway Sunday morning having a few
contractions but nothing to get my attention. My dh and I went walking
to see if they would pick up. Even had some sex!!! But still my body wasn't
ready to get rollin again. Monday, contractions still off and on
all day, of course all my family members are calling to see if I've
had the baby yet!! That is so frustrating!!! Tuesday, 3:00 a.m.
I wake up with really strong menstrual type cramps. I can't sleep
so I get up and go watch t.v. for a while. I put the heating pad
behind my back to help with the cramps. 5:00 a.m. I decided
to go back to bed and try to sleep. I figured this was just the same
old thing and the cramps would go away. Woke up a little after 8
a.m. and noticed a few close strong contractions, but still I was
in denial that this could be it. I got up and showered like usual.
Had a few good ones in the shower too!! But still I was in doubt,
I went about my day as usual, put a load of laundry in the wash and started
to get breakfast for the kids. Then it hit........i was trying to
unload the dishwasher and get some bowls for cereal for the kids.
A really good contraction hit me. I had to really focus and breathe
through it! Then another one.......and another one. They were really
close. I had my oldest get cereal for the rest of the kids.
My hands started to shake with each contraction they were so close and
strong. I went to call my dh to tell him to come home. It was
8:58 a.m when I called him. I remember looking at the clock on the computer.
I tried to time the contractions after I talked with him but I couldn't.
I decided to get into the bath and wait for my dh to get home.
By the time he got home I was having really strong and close contractions.
I was moaning
through them. He asked if we should call someone. I said yeah, call everyone. He called my doula and couldn't reach her (she missed the birth), and then he called the primary on call midwife Kathleen and left a message. Then he paged her. He came back to the bath and told me that he couldn't get ahold of any one. I asked if he called Shauna, the secondary on call midwife, he said no, he couldn't find her number. I got out to show him where it was. He got ahold of Shauna right away, I remember standing there wrapped in a towel having a really strong contraction, while he was talking to her. Said she was on her way. She lives only 10 minutes from my house. Back to the tub for me. My dh was trying to deal with the kids while I was laboring, we couldn't get ahold of either of my sisters to come watch them like we planned. Actually nothing went as planned. Shauna finally arrived, I remember asking her what time it was, I had no concept of time during all this. She said it was about 10:30 a.m. She helped me through a few contractions and then checked the baby's heartrate. It was good. I then decided to get out of the tub for a while and walk around. Shauna asked me, when I felt like it, she would like to check for dilation. I said let's check now. I went to the bed and she checked me......7cm - stretchy to an 8. AHHHHHHHH........i was getting there. It was going fast too!! I then went back to labor in the tub. I don't remember how much longer I labored there, but Kathleen appeared and Shauna disappeared (she was preparing the bedroom for birth). My dh would come in off and on to check on me. He felt bad that he couldn't be there the whole time, he had to take care of the kids. I continued to labor, moaning and groaning through each contraction. I started to feel kinda pushy so Kathleen checked me..........9cm with an anterior lip left of the cervix. She doesn't want me to push yet, but I cant help it. She works with me to breathe through them. Some more time goes and she checks me again..........9 1/2 cm with a lip still, but it feels really stretchy. So it will be ok to start pushing. AHHHHHHH!! It felt good to bear down with each contraction. Made it feel a lot better. A little bit later I just up and decided I wanted out of the tub. We went to the bedroom and I continued laboring there. I squatted while holding on to the bed for a while. Then I switched to hands and knees and pushed that way for a while. I stood up and pushed too. I cant believe how my instincts just took over and I went with it. Finally I laid on the bed, on my right side and got down to some serious pushing. My dh was finally with me then and he held up my left leg while I pushed. Shauna supported my perineum while I pushed with each contraction. I could feel the baby moving down....finally I felt the "ring of fire" of the baby crowing, I reached down to touch his head. It was so cool!! I pushed again and out came his head, but instead of relief I felt so much pain still. Kathleen moved over really fast by Shauna. The next thing I know is they both have their hands down there. It hurt sooooooo bad. I screamed..."what are you doing?" and then let out a huge scream and pushed. He was out!! At 12:35 pm my baby was out and I felt so relieved. What had happened was, instead of his shoulders coming out vertical, one before the other, his were coming out horizontally. They had to rotate him around to come out. UGH! My dh said I scared the heck out of him. Joshua was laid on my belly immediately. I had him at least an hour before Kathleen checked him out, and got to nurse him right away too! Shauna and Kathleen said he was a big boy when he came out. When they weighed him, he was 10lbs 15 oz. I couldn't believe it! He was 21 inches and 15 inch head circumference. This big boy came out of me!! LOL....and I didn't have any tears at all!! Perineum is intact! Anyway all this happened in 4 hours and 20 minutes. I can't believe how fast it all went. So much for my laboring in the kiddy pool. My dh couldn't get it filled up in time. I told him to just forget about it. We also didn't get to video tape the birth either, only just after the birth. Nothing went as expected. I thought I'd be in labor forever like my others but it didn't work out that way. I guess all the reading and preparing for labor, easing my fears, learning relaxation really paid off this time!!! What was weird though is that the pain of the contractions were tolerable this time, they didn't seem to last a long time and I didn't dread the "next one". They felt like really intense menstrual cramps. Had I known I had the option of homebirth with my first, I would have had all my births this way!!! |

| Birth Story: I had a scheduled induction on Monday, November 2 because of preeclampsia. I went in at 7:00 in the morning and by 8:30 the pitocin was started and my water was broken. I came in at only 1cm and 30 % effaced and baby was at minus one station. Once I got to 4 cm I received an epidural so that I could rest and be able to enjoy the baby once she arrived. I had wanteda completely natural childbirth but since I had to be induced I decided to have pain medication. At 4:00p.m. I was only at 5-6 cm and 70% effaced and feeling a little discouraged and then I started having intense pain that the epidural was not even touching. I called the nurse and asked for more medication and my doctor was there and came in and I had gone to 8cm in 15 minutes and this was the reason for the pain. By 5:00 I was complete and baby was at plus one station. I only pushed a couple of times and she was born. They placed her on my stomach and it was the most wonderful moment. We didn't know her gender before she was born so that made it all the more exciting. I never got to hold my other two children right after birth and I am so glad I was given the opportunity this time. Claire has dark hair and blue eyes and is the most beautiful little baby I have ever seen (just like my other two)! |

| Birth Story: I went into the hospital Wednesday
afternoon at 5:00 for the Cervidil insertion. It was done at 5:30. The
doctor hadn't mentioned the possible side effects... some women don't notice
the medicine and sleep just fine but I, of course, was not that lucky...
I was up all night with cramps that ended measuring more severe than my
worst contraction! Finally DH, who was wonderful enough to stay with me
got a couple of hours of sleep while I paced the floor and cried. Finally
the took the cervidil out about 5:15 but would not start the pitocin because
I was in so much pain. About 6:00 the cramps subsided enough for me to
sleep for 5 or 10 minutes, then the pitocin was started just before 6:30.
The doctor came in about 7 and said my cervix was way at the back still,
I was a little thinned but still only 1 centimeter dilated and he would
see about breaking my water around lunchtime. He wanted to wait on giving
my an epidural but agreed to Nubain...which I didn't want ( and didn't
end up getting). When they checked me at 11 am nothing had changed! I was
so frustrated that DH, who is a holistic healer, helped my contractions
along and by the time the doctor got there at 12:45, my cervix had moved
forward just enough to break my water and start the internal monitors.
He said he was going to come back after office hours and check on me..that
they would slow the pitocin so I could sleep about 9 pm and I informed
him that the baby would be born one way or another that day.
He agreed to give me an epidural at that time because I had been in so much pain, and had some severe back labor. I had found that I could turn on my side and get a few minutes sleep and get a little relief from the back labor, but I was still in very severe pain. After the epidural I felt much better and was able to get 15 minutes sleep at a time. When they checked me at 2 I was at 3 centimeters finally and the baby's heartbeat changed so they checked me again at 2:25 and I was at 4. At 3 I was at 5 and at 4 I had dilated to 9. I had not felt any of the contractions but at 4:30, she had me start pushing to get the head moved a little further down. After 2 contractions the nurse called the doctor and he was there in about 10 minutes. I pushed for a total of about 25 minutes and Darron was born at 5:00 exactly. He weighed in at 8 lbs, 1 oz and was 19 inches long. I had to have an episiotomy but I tore anyway. I tore up and left, and also tore underneath and to the right, so it took a long time to stitch me up because the doctor had to make sure the underneath layer was stitched up as well. The baby had apgar scores of 8 and 9. He's very quiet so far but talks a LOT in his sleep!

| Birth Story: I was diagnosed with Toxemia and
was sent in for a non stress test Friday. 0% dialated and 0% effaced.
Dr. decided to induce. A cervical gel was inserted for a 12 hr period.
At 2:30 AM Sat morning (10/24) it was removed and the Pitocin was started.
I was sent into 1 minute apart contractions almost immediately. At
6:30 AM my water broke on it's own. Labor was getting intense so
I got the epidural at around 9:30 AM. Unfortunately I could feel
each & every contraction!! OUCH!! They upped my dosage on the
epi. About 9:30 that same night the Dr. decided to give me another
epidural because the first one wasn't working for me... Well...
the second epi didn't work either. Also, I was only 5cm dialted and
I was beginning to swell close. Dr. gave me an hour rest off the
pitocin drip. An hour later they put me back on the drip and the
contractions were once again very strong and one minute apart lasting about
70 seconds! The epidural was not working!! I was experiencing
a "natural" labor. Dr. checked my cervix after an hour and it was
swelling closed again. Because of the Toxemia my BP was incredibly
high and baby's heartbeat was slowing. I was wheeled in for a c-section.
Well I could feel way too much of the cutting and I grabbed the attending
nurses arm - causing her to drop her instruments. They went ahead
and put me under completely. So I missed little Regan's arrival.
But she handled all the stress like a champ. She is perfect and no
worse for wear. I woke up in recovery 3 hours after her birth and
demanded to see her. The nurses told me to rest and spend time with
her in the morning. But I demanded and was breastfeeding her within
10 minutes!! I think we amazed them all!
Well, it wasn't the picture perfect birth experience I planned for.. but Regan Kelly is here and she is the love of my life. I healing great. My blood pressure is coming down and I'm just thrilled. |

| Birth Story: Robert Walter Rust entered the world
on November 24 at 7:27am via "urgent" c-section. Twelve hours after my
water broke on the 23rd we were admitted to the hospital so that the baby's
heart rate and my contractions could be measured. I was dialated at 2 cm
and the baby was at -1 station. We encountered on problem. My contractions
were not steady or strong enough (or so the nurses/doctor felt) to bring
my child into the world within the 18hr window to avoid infection. I was
started on a penicillan drip and strongly encouraged to allow Pitocin to
be administered. After my dh and I discussed it we decided to give the
Pitocin a shot. Well 9 hours after that (midnight now - water broke 24
hours earlier) the high level of pitocin in my system was causing severe
contractions that were coming every minute or so. A quick check on my dialation
- we were up to 4!!! A problem developed however. The external monitor
was picking up weird heart rates, and they were not sure if they were mine
or the baby's. The pitocin was stopped and an internal monitor was inserted.
Two more hours went by with the pitocin off - dialated to 5 now. Got some
pain killers and pitocin started again. Two more hours - dialated to 5
1/2. Got a partial spinal ( able to move around, just felt no pain). Baby's
heart rate drops. After changing positions baby is stable. Pitocin increased,
baby's heart rate drops again. Pitocin stopped until baby is stable again.
This continues for two more hours. Dialated to 6 now, but baby's heart
rate continues to drop with each contraction. C-section recommended and
accepted by spouse and myself. Baby enters the world at 7:27am 30 hours
after water broke. It turns out during the crazy contractions at midnight
the baby did some dancing and got the cord wrapped around his neck. He
proceded to head down the birth canal as best he could since I did not
dialate to let him out. The further along he got the tighter the cord got.
With each contraction it pulled tighter.
I am recovering well. I am thrilled with my son and how
strong my husband was. I will NEVER do the pitocin thing again. I much
prefer the C-Section to that particular drug.

| Birth Story: Friday night at 10:30pm I started
feeling crampy. I decided to start timing my contractions at 11pm. They
were coming every 4 minutes to 7 minutes apart. I timed them until 2am.
I called L&D (being that we live an hour away) and the nurse
said to go to bed and get some rest and to come in if my water breaks or
the contractions get closer together. I went to bed and at 5:30am
Saturday morning, I felt like I wet my pants. I
went to the bathroom and noticed blood on my underwear and in the toilet. DH and I got dressed and left for the hospital around 6am getting to the hospital around 7am. I was dilated to a 4 and my bag of waters was still intact. The doctor started pitocin to get my contractions coming closer together. I had MAJOR back labor which was relieved only a little bit with a painkiller. The doctor had to break my water and after 5 minutes of pushing, Christopher Joseph was born at 12:58pm Saturday afternoon with the cord around his neck. He weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces and was 21 1/4 inches long. Christopher had a little bruise on his cheek from the cord. His APGAR scores were 8 and 9. We found out on Monday morning that Christopher has a
heart murmur. He had a chest x-ray, EKG, and a echocardiogram done that
morning. The echo showed two VSD's. One small one that the pediatric cardiologist
Christopher looks great (nice and pink) and has been breastfeeding wonderfully every 2-3 hours. |

| Birth Story: I went to the hopital with a scheduled inducement date on October 20th. My husband, father, stepmother and I showed up at about 8am. Everyone was told to wait in the waiting room while they checked me in and got me ready. I was so nervous and scared(never been incuced before) that I had literly made myself sick. They finally let my husband and my stepmother come in the room with me. My step mom left and my father came in along with the Dr. The Dr. then checked my cervix to determine which way they was going to start inducing me, my cervix was still high and firm so they put the cervi gel on my cervix, the Dr then left the room and came back shortly afterwards with the Ultra sound machine, I asked him what he was doing and he told me that he was checking to see where the babies head was, come to find out our little one decided to do a complete flip and wanted to enter the world with his backside first. Well the Dr then told us in cases like that they usually send the mother home to see if the baby would turn on his own but my little one turned so akward that he had his cord up by his neck and they was afraid that if he turned again that he would wrap the cord around his neck so they did an emergancy c-section on me. They got my husband and I ready to go into surgury and off we went. Our little Douglas was brought into this world and 10:21am weighing 8lbs 6.5 oz 21 inches long. He was the most beautiful thing in the world. I did not get to see him for almost 5 hours afterwards as my epidural did not work so they ended up giving me something to help me relax and it put me to sleep and then the surgury ended up talking longer after they delivered Douglas because they ended up taking out half of my left overy as I had a huge cyst on it. They had to put the baby in NICU for about 2 hours because he had trouble breathing for a while. He is doing fine now. He is weighing close to 12 pounds by now (if not more). All in all it was worth all the pain of the c-section and I would do it all over |

| Birth Story: My water broke at 3:30 am on the
22nd. We arrived at the hospital by about 5 am, but I still wasn't
having contractions. By 8 am I could feel contractions but they were
mild and erratic. I was 2 cm. We walked, I sat in the jacuzzi,
and watched TV for a while, and between 10 and 11, the contractions picked
up to about 5 min apart. Just before noon I was having contractions
anywhere from 1-3 min apart, but when they checked I was still only 2-3
cm. I could have cried. I worked through contractions for another
hour at which point I decided to ask for an epidural (which I never got)
since things seemed to be going pretty slow. Well, as I was being
moved to my birthing room things got so intense I knew I was in transition
- and wouldn't be getting my epidural! My labor nurse came into the
room and took one look at me and decided she better check me. Except
for a small lip of cervix I was fully dilated and ready to go! That's
when things got scary - they put the fetal heart montitor on and it took
me a moment to register how slow the heart rate was (60-90).
Well, the same thing happened with my first (except his heart had dipped
to 0 a couple of times) and I couldn't believe it. My Dr wasn't there
yet, so a resident and the head of obstetrics delivered my son, quickly
(just like #1 - my doctor missed him too!) He was pretty blue although
he was breathing pretty well, so it was decided a trip to the NICU was
in order. So he was whisked off to NICU, and when they couldn't deliver
my placenta I was whisked off for a spinal anesthetic and manual extraction
of the placenta. My poor DH was just left standing there, no baby
and wife in the OR.
I didn't get to see Christopher until the next morning, but DH was down in the NICU feeding and holding him. His vital signs were fine by about an hour after birth, but his blood sugars were low and he spent 36 hours in NICU. Now he is doing great and we all adore him. |

| Birth Story: I was scheduled to be induced on
11/4. Started having labor pains on the morning of 11/3 at about
3:00 a.m, strong enough to keep me awake. These subsided as the day
went on. When I went to bed that night the pains started again.
I was up all night walking in circles in the livingroom or laying in the
bathtub in warm water (actually slept some in the tub). Called L&D
at 6:45 to asked if I should still come in for induction they said yes
and we arrived at hospital at about 7:20 a.m.
Started pitocin, at a very low level and broke my water at about 8:00 a.m. I was dialated to 1 cm, had been for two weeks. They hooked me up to the fetal monitor and I was basically confined to the bed, that was where I could least manage the pain. The contractions became unbarable soon after and I don't remember much over the next five to six hours. I asked for and got some pain medication, Stadole (spl). Didn't help one bit, only made me drowsy. After that I asked for an epidural. After what seemed like forever and three attempt, I finelly got some pain relief. Before the epidural I was dialated to 5 cm, after the epidural I was back down to 3 cm. Skyler had decended into the birth canel and wedged himself up against the cervix. The doctor came in and told me that we would have to do a c-section, because of the above and the fact that Skyler's heart rate would drop with each contraction. Stan didn't think he could handle the c-section (and it wasn't like he had been much help up to this point anyway) so my aunt went into the operating room with me. Skyler was born at 3:39 p.m. When they showed him to me he was an ashen color, his nose was real flat and wide and his eyes were really wide, like he had been startled. I thought "If that's my baby, I have some explaining to do." My aunt told me that I actually said this and the anesthesioligist started laughing and told us that they come out like that and not to pay too much attention to me because my b/p had dropped. I don't remember this conversation, only my aunt saying that Skyler was started to "pink up." I was really embarrassed when she told me that I had voiced this thought. Because of Skyler's size and the size of my uterus, they had to take the epidural really high and the only part of my body I could feel was my neck up. I could not hold Skyler because I had no control over my hands and arms. They brought him into the room about four hours later, it may not have been this long but seemed like it. They had kept him in the nursery because of his own problems. It turned out that he had a blood disorder that is called neonatal hyperviscosity. It is when the newborn has too many red blood cells, therefore his blood is too thick and he cannot maintain body temp or blood surgar levels and he has dificulty breathing, his color is off and he is not very active. This can cause brain damage, heart problems and even death. They administered an IV to help maintain his blood sugar level and two days later did a partial transfusion (taking out some of his blood and replacing it with saline). This was done on Friday. On Saturday, they took him off his IV and the nurse was giving him some formula when Skyler choked and turned blue. Since they were suppose to be bringing Skyler into me, when he didn't show up I went to the nursery. When I walked in with the doctor, they had Skyler stripped down to his diaper, on a heating table with oxygen, I about had a heart attack. The doctor had the nurse explain to me what happened and of course I lashed out at the nurse, I was so upset. They wanted to start the IV again but could not get one started, they had already used both of his feet and had been unable to get the veins in the hands. The doctor wanted to do a spinal to check for an infection, he was concerned because Skyler was not eating good and spitting up what he did eat. The doctor hit a blood vein and was unable to get the spinal fluid needed to check for menengitis (spl). At this point, instead of putting the IV in Skyler's head, which was the last option, his doctor called a neonatel specialist at the university hospital in Albuquerque. They agreed to leave Skyler off the IV and sugars for 24 hours to see how he was doing. We did this for 24 hours and then they kept him for another 24 hours to watch him without monitoring his blood sugar level. He was finally able to go home on Monday, he was six days old. As of now, he is a happy healthy 2month old. He has a healthy appitiete and is gaining weight. |

| Birth Story: On Saturday the 17th my husband was
on duty and I was to be faced with a blood test at the hospital all on
my own. When I went they assumed I was in labour and did my blood pressure.
During the bp I told them I wasn't in labour and they surprisingly (thankfully)
noticed that my bp was high. Very high for myself and yada yada they admitted
me for it because I had protein in my urine as well. I was told I would
be there for a while until I was going to be closer and have an amnio to
see if baby's lungs were mature. They would do that on Monday. On Monday
my bp escalated and they wouldn't risk me giving labour so a c sec was
done. I had DH with me and at 2:26pm we met the most beautiful and perfect
baby girl, all of our own. I still remember the quiver in my voice when
they asked me her name and I heard myself say Caitlin Elaine Poole. It
was all a dream. I had a remarkable recovery and the both of us are doing
wonderfully. Thank you everyone for your support and friendship. Even though
I didn't get a shower, nothing could have compared to this gift. IT was
fun looking for girl clothes. But I think I have to go to another country
for the good stuff.
Thank you again everyone. Rhianna and Caitlin |

| Birth Story: My last two sons were born after labors of less than 3 hours, so my midwife suggested that we induce this time to ensure that the baby would born at the hospital and not the back seat of the car. We went into the hospital on 11/17 at 7:30 am. My midwife (Tracy) broke my water at 8:30..DH & I walked the halls for 2 hours, but nothing was happening. At 10:45, the L&D nurse set me up on an IV with a low dosage of pitocin. Painful contractions began around 11:20. After an hour of painful, but bearable (the breathing helped) contractions, my nurse thought I was getting close. I still thought I had a way to go, as I was waiting for the pain to get worse. Tracy came in, checked me..and I was 10cm dilated (I was 3.5 when I got there)..so she said "PUSH"..I pushed 2 times (four minutes)..and Cameron was here..his cord was around his neck, but they freed him..and he had a lot of mucus that needed to be sucked out..but other than that, he was perfect!! I must admit, I had an extremely easy labor and delivery. |

| Birth Story: Alec was our third baby, and was a third c-section. It was scheduled two weeks beforehand, due to some of my paranoias of having a VBAC (the risks of complications - I still had at LEAST a 50/50 chance of winding up with a c-section anyway), and I also decided to have my tubes tied. So they did it all at the same time. |

| Birth Story: As most of you know I was diagnosed
with GD at 28 weeks and had to follow the GD diet.. as time went by my
levels were getting harder to control so I was using insulin every morning
and that was very helpful in maintaining good levels. I was told that GD
mom's are normally not left to go overdue so at least I knew the end was
insight. On the 26th Oct. I had my weekly appt. with the OB and he
decided that with my high BP he was checking me in for a night at the hospital
to try and relax and get it lowered, then if the labor area was not busy
he would attempt induction. (yeah!!)
So the next morning pressure was a little lower, off to the case room..at 9:40am tried to break my water, did'nt think it worked, tried a small amount of prostaglandin gel and just wait it out. At 10:00am my water broke, nurses noticed it a "little tea stained" (looked like might strong tea to me though!!) But all was fine with baby on the monitor and I was insured all was going fine. 3 hours later at 1:00pm I was already having to breath thru the contractions. They checked my dilation at 2:00pm and discovered only 4cm. I was so disappointed and wondering what it would be like later as the pain was already very intense. Out comes the nitrous oxide(what a relief that was!!) They checked me again at 3:00pm and saw that I was already to 8cm!! So a quick call to the Dr. and away we go!! The Dr. examed me when she arrived and said there was still some cervix left to move.. a high anterior lip I think she said?? anyway.. had to hold off the pushing while she tried to manipulate it out of the way while I continued with my contractions. As soon as it was gone I was able to push and after only 2 pushs our beautiful little man arrived!!! What a feeling that was to see him being born, I did'nt see my first son being born and now wish I had, what a marvelous experience it was!!! Mason had a low blood sugar score at birth so they supplimented him with some formula and it corrected itself right away. My GD is gone, and I guess that in a few weeks I may have to have another GTT test to ensure it is gone. I can't tell you what a treat it is not to have to test for ketones and test blood and take insulin everyday anymore... what a freeing feeling! :-) We were discharged on the 29th and noticed his color changing, so the early discharge nurses were notified and they began daily visits to weigh him and ensure that my milk was coming in properly for him. All is fine now, we all had good cries over this, very frustrating not having anything for a very hungry baby. Now we are all happy, I'm actually able to sleep at night when Mason is. :-) Our 6 yr. old son Taylor dearly loves his little brother and even the cats have taken on the odd babysitting shift. lol If you've read this far, thanks for hanging in there, to those who have had their babes, give them an extra hug tonight and for those who have yet to give birth, enjoy this wonderful miracle and treasure it always! |

| Birth Story: Friday the 13th was my due date. My mom was home w/me that day. At 4pm that day, when she usually leaves, I said "I think I'm going to ask you to stay until Scott (DH) gets home b/c I've been having regular contrax again" (although they were only about 15-20 minutes apart). Well, DH got home, mom left and the contrax kept coming. I'd gone through this before tho, and been faked-out so made dinner and we watched "Happy Gilmore". By 10 pm it was time to call the doc, b/c they were 7 min. apart steady and increasing intensity. Doc said to go to L&D. Got to L&D room by 10:45 and was checked out by nurse who called doc again. Things were progressing slowly but he said I'd just end up going back so let me labor there. Doc called in again later and came around 4pm. I was at 3-4 cm - suprised b/c although they were coming 2min apart & still increasing intensity I didn't find the contrax too painful. Doc broke water (ouch) and started pitocin. Since we were heading into active labor I asked for the epidural and he said I could have it as soon as two bags of IV were done. Contrax starting to hurt, but didn't get epi. for 2 more hours! There was a question about the 1st set of blood drawn and the nurse & lab were terribly slow about the second set. Those were the hardest two hours of my life & I couldn't have made it w/out DH coaching me to breathe through the pain. But once I got epi. it was smooth sailing. Then I starting to feel the pressure and in no time, we started pushing. Only about 1.5 hours of pushing and out came a pretty big head...what a relief...one more big push and our beautiful son was born!!! |

| Birth Story: Many of you know that when I went
to my regular appointment on Friday, October 23, my doctor said I was dilated
to 5 and that I should go home, get my things, make arrangements and get
to the hospital A.S.A.P. We did that, only to sit for three hours with
no further activity. We were allowed to go home. I was kind of relieved
because to be perfectly honest, the whole took me by complete surprise
and I was feeling pretty scared. We went through the following day on pins
and needles wondering when the next "signal" would come. I thought perhaps
I could go for awhile since none of my four previous babies had been more
than 9 days early, and this baby wasn't due until November 12. Saturday
night I went to bed and suffered the same problems I had for over a week....painful
BH's that I attributed to gas and other digestive problems. I went to the
bathroom about 2:30 and felt a little spurt of liquid...I thought it must be pee, and then I wondered if it might be my water. I went to the side of our bed and woke Tom, saying that I think my water might be breaking. That provoked another gush, and I was sure. My water continued to leak all the way to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital and they hooked me up to the monitor. Contractions were weak and not very regular. It was interesting because I had never been able to labor lying down or tolerate having the monitor hooked up, but this time I decided to give it a try. I found that I was able to focus on my contractions and work through them. Tom was a huge help, comforting me, encouraging me and working on positive visualizations. The contractions began to intensify and regulate....the nurse checked me and I was at 7. I felt really discouraged because the contractions began to really intensify and come more often. I was asked if I wanted something for pain and I declined. I really felt that I was handling it and my experience with narcotics had been that they didn't help much. They called the doctor (one that I really liked thank goodness) and he was there very shortly. He checked me and I was at 9...I then revealed my horrible secret. I told him that I was a pathetic pusher and I was scared to death. He smiled and said that he had just the thing for me. They set up the birthing bed and he gave me this strip of cloth to pull on during my pushing contractions. It worked like a charm, and within two good pushes the baby's head popped out. However with the next push I panicked. The shoulders felt like they were stuck, and I definitely lost my cool (aka yelled alot). Doctor told me not to push (he must have been checking for the cord) so I held on and tried to stop (not the easiest thing to do!!) The next push brought Owen into the world crying and thrashing around. God what a beautiful sight. Tom cut the cord and tried to take the baby from the doctor to put on my chest. The nurse took the baby to clean him up and weigh him, but I had other ideas. I tried to get up off the table and go after him. The doctor laughed and said to the nurse that she had better give Mom the baby. So I held him to my chest and he started to nurse a little. After a few minutes I relinquished him to the nurse and we found out he was 9 pounds 1 ounce. Thank goodness he was three weeks early, and no wonder people stared at my huge belly. He had some problems with his blood sugar, and then he jaundiced quite badly, but that is all behind us now. Sometimes it feels like a dream...I can't believe I had anything to do with the creation of this beautiful, beautiful child. I heard Tom talking to Owen the other night and he said, "There must be a God, because who else could have created you." This is the note Tom sent to the people on his ICQ list.... Susan had a baby today. Owen Christopher Elliott Townsend weighed 9 lb. 1 oz. and is 20 1/2 inches long. Bothe Susan and Owen are doing just fine and we hope they will be coming home Tuesday. We thank God that Owen is healthy and that there were no complications during delivery. This is the greatest gift I have ever been given. Thank you to each and everyone of you. This was a difficult pregnancy for certain reasons...one of which being my age and the worry that Owen would be okay. There were days when contact with you ladies on this board was the only thing that kept from total worry and panic. I couldn't have done it without you...... |

| Birth Story: On Monday, October
19th, I called my OB and asked her if we could move up my scheduled c-section
to deliver Evian. I had been having terrible pain and contractions
for weeks. I was stil trying to hold out for the 30th, but
after the ultrasound on the Saturday prior indicating that all was well
with the baby, I decided it was probably safe to deliver her.
We decided on Thursday, October 22nd. I went into the hospital Wednesday morning, October 21st for my pre-op interview. They called my OB's partner to ask about special instructions for bloodwork since I'm severely anemic. He's the one doing the surgery and he didn't even KNOW we had moved up the date. Guess Susan (his partner, my OB) hadn't told him. Oh well....... Thursday morning 2 am -- can't sleep. Up doing laundry, packing my bag still, holding and playing with Kashmir as I won't see her for several days. The tears start flowing.... 5:30 am I wake up Brian. I'm still starving since I've had nothing to eat since 10 pm the night before. I'm thirsty and they told me I can't even have water (sigh). 7:15 am, we arrive the hospital. Some idiot is parked out front of labor and delivery and won't move his car. I can't get out of our van because he's in the way. HUGE fight ensues. Brian pushes his car out of the way with our new van (sigh). I'm praying this guy doesn't have a gun. We alert security. I can feel my blood pressure rising. We get upstairs for pre-op and the nurse who's supposed to take care of me is late so I get some idiot who's rushing to put an IV in. I told her she'd better not "screw it up" in her haste. They take my BP and are not too happy -- it's 140 over 98 (normal for me is 100/60). Hemoglobin indicates all is well with a reading of 8.7. Finally, Scott arrives (my OB's partner). I ask him where Susan is and am told she's doing a delivery elsewhere and won't be coming. I'm crushed. She's not only my doctor, but my friend so I try not to show how upset I am at this news. I am in severe pain after they put the catheter in. The Anesthesiologist comes in and we discuss the epidural procedure. Since I've been through it before just last year with Kashmir, it seems like no big deal. As they wheel me into the OR to put in the epidural, the pelvic pain, contractions and pain from the catheter are so bad I can barely move. They finally get me sitting up to put the needle in my back. After the first attempt, I began shaking uncontrollably and am now hysterical. The Anesthesiologist freaks out and tells Brian to leave the OR as they prepare to put me under. The last thing I remember is Susan, my OB arriving and asking me "what's wrong" and that she'll be there to look after me. Then they strap my arms and legs down as they put the oxygen mask over my face and I drift off to sleep. They call Brian back into the OR just before pulling baby Evian out. 8:55 am, October 22, 1998 -- Evian Chanel Adams arrives weighing 6 lbs., 2 oz. 18 1/2 inches long. She is SO beautiful, with long slender fingers and toes, a round head with lots of light brown fuzz, and she looks exactly like Brian. Her features are so pretty and delicate and she squeaks. I remember waking up as they are trying to transfer me from the OR guerney into a hospital bed in my room. It's a struggle and I'm in severe pain and still very groggy from general anesthesia. My throat is raw from the tube where they intubated me and I can only mouth the words, "I HURT"!!! After realizing I'm hooked up to a PCA pump filled with Demerol, I start to feel better. Brian swears that I wore out the button on that pump the first few hours. I feel like I'm dying and all I can hear is the doctors discussing what to do about my hemoglobin. It's plummeted to 6.8 and they're talking about a transfusion. I ask them to wait until the next morning before making a decision and they relent but are watching me carefully and taking my BP every 10 minutes. The rest of Thursday night is a total blur but the moment I see Evian, the tears of joy are there and I realize it's all been worth it. The amount pain and suffering for this tiny miracle of life seems so insignificant now. Friday morning I'm bounce back to my old self and am feeling good, cracking jokes, ordering the doctors and nurses around. We watch as the nurses bathe and weigh Evian -- she's lost a few ounces, but nothing to worry about. Her eyes are so big and intense as she blinks to shut out the bright lights. From Thursday to Saturday, we have no less than 30 visitors, ranging from doctors and nurses from the PICU, the NICU and even one of the doctors from Miami Children's hospital stops by.....sheepishly hanging his head afraid that I'll kick him out of my room. I brag how wonderful Kashmir is doing and that she's up to 19 pounds and a very happy camper as I whip out her latest photos. I insist on going home Saturday morning and start calling for discharge orders. By 8 am I've been discharged but we're waiting on the Neonatologists to discharge Evian. These are the same doctors who took care of Kashmir and they are so happy to see us with a healthy baby. It's now Sunday morning and as you can imagine, we're exhausted. Jake was sick for 24 hours with a high fever and vomiting, etc. We almost rushed him into ER, but he has turned the corner and is better today. I've got steel staples in my abdomen that are killing me and I can barely walk. My entire body is sore all over but I know this is temporary. Evian is fast asleep in her cradle (was Kashmir's cradle) next to Brian's side of the bed. He's such a good Daddy, waking up every 2 hours to feed her, change her diaper, burp her and put her back to sleep. He looks haggered, but happy. It was obvious that Kashmir missed me as I held her for hours the first night home. She's SO HUGE I can barely hold her in my lap anymore. We put Evian in the crib with Kashmir and had a good laugh at the difference in size between the two Princess girls. As tired as we are, Brian and I have these silly grins plastered on our faces. We couldn't be happier and realize how blessed we are to have such beautiful children. It's all been worth it and we're certain things can only get better from here on out. Check out our website with new pictures of the babies! http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mia/s/p/spiko/ Love to all, --Spiko (one exhausted Mommy) |

| Birth Story: I was in labor all day Monday the
16th and didn't realize it -- very mild back pain. By that evening
(8:20 p.m. to be exact) I was noticing that the pain was getting worse.
The contraction got so strong so quickly that I wasn't sure I could even
manage to take a shower. Anyway, we made it to the hospital and by
the time they checked me at about 10:00 p.m., I was already 6 cm and 100%
effaced. By 11:00 p.m. when the anesthiologist was just getting around
to figuring out what to give me, I was 8 cm. I received an intrathecal
injection which took effect in just a few minutes, and had painfree delivery
from there on out. By midnight, we were pushing. At about 1:30
a.m. they realized that little Locke was stuck and out came the forceps.
Things moved pretty quickly from there.
Locke had the umbilical cord around his neck, but they quickly cut it and everything turned out fine. They just watched him for a few hours to make sure his color came back. He got 7 and 8 for his apgar scores. I had a second degree tear, and my healing has gone a little more slowly that I would have liked, but things are MUCH better now. Locke is beautiful and we love him very much (of course). Best of all, our dog has truly adopted him as her own -- no problems there!! Amy, Steve and little baby Locke |
