      No-Kill Conference
      Our vice-president Laura Russell
went to the No-Kill Conference in Chicago. She brought back tons of great
information and got to meet Chelsea, a phenomenal young lady who helped
raise money for Skittles' new wheelchair (He had outgrown the original
chair). There was lots to see and do, below are excerpts from Laura's
report and photos from the conference.

"I got back from Chicago late last night. The No-Kill
Conference was phenomenal! I have never seen SO much facilitated networking in my whole
life. I learned so much, came back with so many wonderful ideas to share,
and so much of everyone else's literature that my bag was 5 lbs.
overweight! I met so many wonderful people....Linda Foro and her team do such a great job of the
      symposium...."

"I met with Chelsea Sky Link and her Mom, Cindy, and brought
back a check for $250 that Chelsea and her group of 12 girls (KidVets) raised for Skittles'
new wheelchair. She tells me that their next fundraiser is to be for Baxter's cataract surgery, and she will send more information on that later.
Chelsea is one phenomenal young lady! I feel so blessed to have been able to
meet her and to do what little networking I could for her at the conference."

  Chelsea and Miss Virginia, Kellie
Lightbourne

"You all aren't going to believe this, but the current Miss Virginia, Kellie
Lightbourne, and her mom, were at the conference as well. She wanted to meet
Chelsea, which she did, and I have several pictures of them to prove it! Since Chelsea's mother's mom is here in Virginia Beach, she was quite
excited. Kellie has promised to get Chelsea's story and pictures to the press, so I'm hoping that Meower Power will get a little press on her
coattails as well. Kellie's "cause" is animal welfare, and she tells me that
the pageant organization has committed to supporting her efforts. Look to hear more from her in the future. She turns over her crown in two weeks, so
she will have a fair amount of press access. She is a third year law student
   at U of Florida."

"I met Merritt Clifton, the editor of the newspaper "Animal
People", who is going to do a story about Chelsea and Meower Power. He tells me he has heard
"good things" (his words) about Meower Power. I met Louise Holton and Becky Robinson of Alley Cat Allies, and they did a "photo op" with
Chelsea, since KidVets donated $100 to them as well. I tried to introduce Chelsea to as
many of the people I thought might be useful to her as I could, as she expresses a desire to see
KidVets go national. I got the address and name info of the appropriate people at Best Friends, and will contact them
shortly. Best Friends, BTW, is the lead 'spokes-group' for the shelter/Sanctuary contingent of the National No-Kill
Movement, and works closely with Maddies' Fund."

"I cannot stress how important it is to connect with all these other groups and network with
all these 'movers and shakers' in the No-Kill Movement. Things happen because intelligent people bounce great ideas off each other, and someone
else picks the ball up and runs with it. Maybe I'm really just a 'child of the sixties' after all, but if we don't take care of the Earth
and all Her Life Forms, who will? It all starts with one person taking responsibility for
one other animal or group of animals. Together, we can do what we must. Remember: we do it all for them."
