Diana, Princess of Wales was born on July 1, 1961 to the Viscount Althorp Spencer (who upon his father's would become the 8th Earl Spencer) and the Hounorable Francis Spencer. Her first years were spent at Park House, which is on the vast estate of Sandringham, which is the Queen's Christmas residence. Her mother and father divorced in June 1969. Her mother soon after married Peter Shand-Kydd, and her name then changed to the Honourable Francis Shand-Kydd. When Diana was 14 years old, her father became the 8th Earl Spencer, and the family moved to the family estate at Althorp. She came into focus when she became engaged to HRH Prince Charles on February 24, 1981, and would become the first Princess of Wales in more than 70 years. The previous one being the wife of King George V, who became Queen Mary in 1910. She became HRH (Her Royal Highness) Diana, Princess of Wales on July 29, 1981 upon her marriage to HRH Charles, Prince of Wales. She had two sons as a result of her marriage. William Arthur Phillip Louis was born on June 21, 1982 and Henry Charles Albert David who was born on September 15, 1984. She was separated from Prince Charles on December 9, 1992 and was divorced from him on August 28, 1996. Upon her divorce from the Prince, she lost her HRH status, but retained her title Princess of Wales. Henceforth, she would be known as Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. As daughter of an English Earl, she inherited the title of "Lady". During her marriage to the Prince, and even after, she became the most photographed woman in the world. Never a day went by that she was not followed somewhere by some member of the press, clamouring to get a photograph of her, that would, no doubt, bring in a tidy sum of money. It was due to this constant hounding of the press that resulted in her in a tragic automobile accident on August 31, 1997 in Paris. Her chauffer at the time was under the influence of alcohol and prescription medication. It is offically recognized that several factors played a part in the accident, but the main one was the condition of her chauffer. She, unfortunately, was not wearing a seat belt at the time, and might well have survived if she had been. The only survivor of the crash, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only person wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Speed also played a part, and was a direct result of the driver trying to escape from the pursuing paparazzi. The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales was held at Westminster Abbey in London on September 6, 1997. Diana was buried on a private island, known as "The Oval" on the grounds of Althorp, owned by her brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer. It is located approximately 70 miles outside of London. The princess will forever be remembered for her kindness that was displayed throughout her life through her many charitable organizations. She was a patron of at least 6 charities at the time of her . The most notable ones are The British Red Cross, and Great Ormond St Hospital for Children. She was also one of the very first high status celebrities to use her position to bring awareness to the tragedy of the victims of AIDS. This she accomplished well through the National AIDS Trust. |
