A really interesting site. I have read articles on GSD's in Germany being super strong SchIII and HGH titled dogs. Do you know of any Australian organisations which temperament test GSD's for HGH suitability? Our Dogs come mainly from DDR Border Patrol and Schutzhund titled stock but there are some HGH titled dogs in the line as well. Sorry about not knowing the name, I have it on the papers at home. I have a question about my dog. I recieved him from an abusive home and I've had him about a month. He's become very loyal to me in the short period of time I've had him. Unfortunatly, e's having a hard time adjusting to me not being home short periods of time. When I first got him he was very good in the house, I could trust him with no problem. Now that I've had him for a little while he's been acting up. He's deficated in the house numerous time (even after he's been let out), when I tried putting him in a kennel hes tore the fur off of his front legs and nose. I don't know what to do, I don't trust him outside of his cage, but I don't want him injuring himself either. Could you p ease give me some suggestions on what to do. By the way, he has been to some type of formal training, since he does know his commands. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Of all of the things Jib has done, he truly loved herding best. We originally started herding as a means of conditioning him for show but found it to be an adictive activity for both dog and handler. I am looking for a GSD puppy for both a family pet and very small herding dog. Two questions: Are these two aims compatible? and Can a small (3-4) sheep herd be managed by a single dog by this I mean is there enough herd instinct with this few sheep? th herd will be 1 ewe and 2 lambs this year. Also I have an old ram that I am keeping separate. One other question: Last year my ewe jumped a fence and took off, how good is a herding dog at tracking and recovering a solo "lost" sheep usually? Years ago, I was involved in obedience competition but somehow became disinterested in it... I began to enjoy more, the natural abilities of the dogs, such as tracking and now, just recently, have been given the opportunity to test my 3 big German Shepher males in herding. My question to you, is: Do these dogs need to be obedience trained to go before the sheep? I am presently working 3 GSD's in herding. Teah has her herding tested from the CKC and Cheyenne has her Junior Herd Dog. I am training all of them for their herding started throgh the CKC for next summer. In addition I am planning on trialing Cheyenne in the Ranch Dog Trials. I have been herding for about 1 year and have been very fortunate to have taken lessons from some very good trainers who have experience with German Shepherds as well as other breeds. My saving grace has been working with Lynn L ach at Downriver Farms kennel and herding facility up here in Canada. She has lots of experience with Australian Cattle Dogs and brings in different trainers for clinics etc. I have even attended Border Collie Clinics with my dog and have done O.K.! ne of the best things you can do is attend as many clinics etc. as you can and learn from others! It has been a challenge to always apply what is being said to working with a German Shepherd and it is a joy to find this site! I would love to talk to othe s re their experieces etc in training and some of thier solutions to these problems.

It's not been easy finding a trainer with enough knowledge in upright herding dogs to help me with my GSD's. Out of sheer frustration I turned to books, videos and the net for help. Thanks to your websit and others plus some really great books I could ask the right questions and find a trainer who had great ideas on working with MY DOGS! The best thing I could ever do for my dogs was have them watch sheep eat in quiet for weeks and letting them relax in this calm scenerio. While teaching self control going through doors and gates gave them very good ground work as we worked up to actual field work. It's only been a summer but already both dogs are working on their ASCA herding started legs. My female is a typical American style GSD with weak structure but h s nice high drive. My male has the old GSD structure which is GREAT for herding but his temperment is overly sensitive and pushy. (That is in the AKC trialing sense) He'd be better if he was doing HGH; perhaps than he'd be seen as a dog with enthusiasm an fire. He is a strong driving dog which hopefully will be his saving grace in the AKC world. Let me know if you have any tips to help us get through this type of course work. THANKS!! Jette was out of the 2nd to last litter that Gauner sired. She got her HIC & HCT at American Herding Breed Association trials & she had never seen sheep before she got her HIC!! She got the 1st leg of her AKC HT at the GSDCA Nationals in Houston in Nove ber 1991 & had had NO sheepherding training prior to the trial & I had never even seen an AKC sheepherding trial!! She had one working session with sheep before getting the 2nd leg on her HT! This was pure instinct as I had no idea what I was doing! T is same bitch (a beautiful solid black!) had no bitework training before the age of 6 years old but I managed to get her SchHI at the age of 8 years & 3 months old, the first time she tried!! By the way, I noticed on Ron Garner's e-mail to the list that he said Gauner was a KKl 1. This is incorrect - he was "V" rated in conformation but was never breed-surveyed. Also, he didn't come 2nd in a national breed competition - he was the 1978 Vice erding Sieger, so this was an HGH competition. I bred my bitch to Gauner twice and have a grand-daughter of his (a Jette daughter) and 2 great-grand-daughters. I kept Gauner in my home over Christmas when he was 11 1/2 years old and he was a perfect gen leman. I loved this dog and have been very proud of his progeny. His grandson (a Jette son by a Verro vom Kirschental son) has a daughter who got her HGH in the first HGH trial in the U.S.A.! This bitch also has her AKC HX title, so the herding instinc is certainly passed on. The Kirschental lines are wonderful!! Gillian M.
