Way up in northern Thailand, near the Burmese
(Myanmar) border, we found ourselves relaxing for a few days in a spartan
"resort" (bamboo huts) outside of a village. Here, Jill poses in front of the kitchen
with Vandee, the lady who spent two days teaching us the secrets of Thai
cooking.
One of the residents at Pete and Vandee's "resort"
was this gibbon monkey who enjoyed taking the high ground (and picking the
lice out of Dave's hair . . . . just kidding!). When we tired
of this fun, we found out how difficult it can be to free oneself from a creature
with four quick and able "hands"!
We are privileged to sponsor Rotjarin (Rin) through
Compassion International.
Spending the day with her and her parents up in North Thailand
has been one of the highlights of our trip, and we look forward to sharing
in the next 13 years of her life through letters and financial
(school) support.
We were introduced to Rin and her parents by
Compassion field workers and the pastor at her church-run daycare. Here
we pose in front of their one-room, brick and thatch home.
Much of the mountainous regions of Southeast Asia (including
Southwest China) are populated with dozens of minority "hilltribe" groups.
The style of dress often varies greatly between people groups and we
have been fortunate to see many different varieties. Above are some Hmong
girls from Laos.
