CRESS/KRESS LIBRARY

Many of the Cress/Kress families were Palatinates, who were driven from Germany because of religious persecution. Many of the early Cress/Kress immigrants spoke Dutch or Low German. Many of these immigrants arrived by ship at Philadelphia in the mid-1700s.

Descendants of one Kress family remained in Pennsylvania and went on to found the Kress Five and Ten Cent store chain. Another Kress, Johann Nicholas Heinrich Kress migrated to NC. This family traces their ancestors to Heroldus Kress b, 1270, and the name Kres, 883 AD.
