JOHN SNODGRASS WILL
8 Jun 1795 -- Will Bk. 2, pp. 72-3 &
pp. 92, 95: In the name of God Amen. I John Snodgrass of Washington County and State of
Virginia, Being at present frail in body yet of perfect mind and memory thanks be to
Almighty God and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and that it is appointed for
all men once to die and after that to come to judgement Do make and order this my last
Will and Testament in manner and form following And first I recommend my soul to Almighty
God my Creator who gave it trusting that I shall receive full pardon and free remission of
all my Sins and obtain eternal life in and thru the previous Death and merits of Jesus
Christ my blessed Saviour and Redeemer and my body to the earth from whence it was taken
undoubtedly believing that I shall receive the same again at the general Resurection at
the last day thru the mighty power of God whereby he is able to subdue all things unto
himself and as for such Worldly goods and Estate with which it hath pleased God to bless
me with in life I leave and bequeath as followeth, Imprimis I will that all my just debts
and funeral charges be fully paid and satisfied, Item I give and bequeath to my loving
wife Mary Snodgrass for and during her natural life one third of my Estate and likewise my
dwelling house that I now live in if she thinks proper to remain there and her third of
the movebles to be at her own disposal and my will is that my three Daughters Elizabeth
Elenir [Eleanor] and Mary have there living on said land while the live single,
and my will is that my son Matthew is to have his living of my two sons Joseph and John
whichever he chuses to live with And further my will is that Joseph and John as they enjoy
the hole of the land that each of them pays to my three daughters Elisbeth
[Elizabeth] Elenir and Mary to the sum of twenty pounds each twenty pounds in tread to be
paid to Elener ten pounds in tread to Elizabeth and ten pounds in tread to Mary And
likewise my will is that my three sons David and William and Joseph has each of them five
shillings and my Son in Law James Duffy five shillings Likewise my will is that my son
John at his mothers decease to have the hole of that tract of Land and plantation
whereon we now live to be and remain his from this time and forever I likewise give and
bequeath to my said son John Snodgrass two work horses and plow and geers and plantation
___ to work said Land and all to be preased [appraised] by men chosen for that purpose and
likewise the waggon is to remain on said plantation for the yuse thereof and when things
are presed my will is that my three Daughters Elizabeth and Elener and Mary has each of
them a childs part besides the forty pounds above mentioned and likewise to have there
living of said place wile the live single as above mentioned and my will is that
if any one of the three dies them my Will is that her part be devided between the other
two; lastly I do hereby constitute ordain and appoint James Duffy and William Snodgrass my
son in law and son joint executors of this my last Will and Testament Revoking and making
void all former and other Testaments Legacies an exetors re___ and confirming this and
this only to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I now hereunto set my hand
and seal this eight day of Jun in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and
