ilson F. Durham attended the Hebron
District Elementary School and the Washington Academy High School
in Salem, N.Y. He also attended the Troy Conference Academy in
Poultney, Vermont (which is now known as Green Mountain College).
He was born, raised, and died on his farm on Tiplady Road in
Hebron, New York. He was very musically talented, playing the
fiddle for local dances, piano, accordian, and he played a tuba
with the Salem Marching Band. His fiddle and accordian are now in
the possession of his granddaughter, Stacy Ann Cossolini
Niedzwiecki, the author of this genealogy. It is to my
grandfather that this research is dedicated. Wilson had an
interview with a local Washington Co., New York historian, named
Sally Brillon on April 22, 1984 to contribute to her book, "Hebron:
A Century in Review". During that interview, he recalled
some interesting stories. Wilson told of being, "real glad"
when electricity came to the house in 1938 so he could keep his
milk cool and no longer had to cut ice in the winter. He used to
make a $1.00 a day cutting ice. He said that "when we got
our ice box, we thought that was really something!" He
remembered taking cheese from the Hebron Cheese Factory to the
railroad in West Pawlet, Vermont, since each farmer in the area
would take turns in the co-op taking the cheese to the train.
Wilson also took other farmers calves in his Ford pickup
truck to Millers and McLenithans livestock auctions in
Cambridge, New York for about eight years. Wilson described his
grandparents, Joseph and Emma Hills Durham as "good, solid
citizens". The following is the obituary for Wilson Durham :
"EAST HEBRON - Wilson Durham, 80, died Tuesday (May 23, 1989)
at Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Hebron, May 11, 1909, he was the
son of Frederick and Margaret (Spoor) Durham. Mr. Durham was a
retired farmer and a custodian of the East Hebron Cemetery for
many years. His wife, Josephine Durham, died in 1983. Survivors
include one daughter, JoAnn Cossolini of East Hebron; one sister,
Eloise Charlton of Barre, VT; one granddaughter and one niece.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at McClellan Funeral
Home of Salem, with the Rev. Chris Edwards, pastor of the East
Hebron Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at East
Hebron Cemetery. No calling hours are scheduled. The family
suggests that memorials take the form of donations to the Hebron
Fire Department or the Salem Rescue Squad, instead of flowers".
