owen wrote the entrance exam for RMC, even
though he had only seen 1 military parade in his life -
Confederation, when he was 8. He was accepted into the 1st class
(1 June, 1876) and became company-sergeant for "the original
18". He was the top listed cadet, winning the Governor-Generals
medal, and accepted a commission with the Royal Engineers (he had
to withdraw, due to breaking his leg in a carriage accident). He
commanded the RNWMP (1900) and on retirement in 1922 was
appointed a Major-General (Can. Militia) - classmate of C.
