All of these offer
free searches and/or queries, some of them offer additional services for some
fee. Also included on this page is a list of sites that offer to lookup
information (usually surnames) on CDs they own. They are free as long as you
limit yourself to a certain number of requests, and as before, for a small fee
some will offer more complete services.
Online Searches and Queries
Hometown Ancestry: Offers free trials of featured databases. So far
everytime I checked this site, they had the Social Security Death Index and
their World Family Tree for free. The free databases rotate fairly often,
usually with the newest databases for this site being free. You can pay for
membership (monthly or annually) and it gives you access to all their online
databases … virtually hundreds of them. These include marriage records, death
records, veterans records, land records, census records, and more.
Family Tree Maker: offers free searches of
their site and the internet. If a result corresponds to one of their CDs, it
will give you information on how to purchase it if you don't have it. However,
there are some people online who will search them for free (see below).
Lineages Online Queries: Posting and browsing of
these queries are free.
Kindred Konnections: free & pay
services/searches
Roots Surname List: find out who else is
researching a certain surname. It will give you a brief history of the line and
an e-mail address for further inquiries.
Family History Research Register: find out who is
researching same surnames, register you surname, plus several links.
Genealogy Most Wanted: queries, find out who is
researching same surnames.
Surname Springboard: find websites based on
surnames
Irish Emigrants: lists of Irish Emigrants searchable by surname; part of his site on Irish Genealogy
Genealogy Exchange & Surname Registry: translation volunteers,
lookup volunteers, queries, surnames, links, Long Island Genealogy & more.
CD Lookups
Genealogy Is…: has a list of volunteers
for CD lookups organized by CD number.
Free CD searches with a limit of 2
requests per day. Look through their list of CDs and see if any interest you.
They have birth, census, death, land records, marriage records, military
records, ship passenger lists, state records, and World Family Tree CDs. They
will do a comprehensive search for a nominal fee.
Genealogy Most Wanted: has a list of volunteers
who will look up info on CDs, books, or whatever else they might have.
Pam's Genealogy HomePage: offers free lookups of
numerous sources. Most are for TX, some NY, and a few for other states. There
is the 1831 & 1841 Census Index of Ireland. Also, there are census, birth,
bible, church records, and many more.
