SOURCE: Thomas Hollowell received "one cow" in the will of his father. His brother Henry inherited the major portion of his father's land, indicating, that Thomas was out of favor with his father. Robert Capps & Robert Spring, patented 300 acres of land on the Western Branch of Elizabeth River, 30 May 1653, for the transportation of seventeen persons. (Patent Book 3, p. 17, Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol. 1, p. 236, Nell Nugent).

On 16 March 1663, Mary Capps patented 300 acres at the head of Westermost branch of Elizabeth River, running along the land of Peter Rigilsworth to a reedy swamp. This land was granted to Robt. Grymes on 6 May 1652, and assigned to Robert Capps. The land is due to Mary Capps as daughter of the said Robert Capps. (Patent Book 5, p. 308 (285), Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol. 1, p. 494, Nell Nugent). Dennis Ashley and Edward Outlaw patented 556 acres in Lower Norfolk Co. at the head of the Western Branch of Elizabeth River on 20 April 1682. This land was described as being at the head of Robert Capps' land near Thomas Cottle, and by Capps' now Hollowell's land to John Freeman. 300 acres were granted to Thomas Dyer on 9 April 1662 and assigned to him by Francis Thelaball and his wife Sarah, the daughter and heiress of Thomas Dyer, 256 acres was for the transportion of five persons. Thomas Hollowell married Mary Capps before 9 April 1662 as proven by the preceding deed.

Mary Capps Hollowell was deceased by 20 April 1682 when Mary Hollowell was granted 400 acres in Lower Norfolk Co., towards the head of the Western Branch of Elizabeth River, 300 acs. beginning on the line of Peter Rigglesworth. This land was granted to Mary Capps 16 Mar. 1663 and due the said Mary Hollowell, her daughter and sole heiresse. 100 acres adjacent this said tract and the land of Tho. Cottle was due for the transportation of Arthur Spoure (or Spourl) twice. (Patent Book No. 7. p. 145, Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. 2, Nell Marion Nugent, p. 234).

Thomas Hollowell, Jr. was a witness to the marriage of his brother, Henry Hollowell, in 1680. Included among the witnesses were two Sarah Hollowell's listed as "sister." One Sarah was probably the wife of Thomas Hollowell, Jr. (Some Marriages In Burned Record Counties of Virginia, Compiled by Virginia Genealogical Society). Thomas Hollowell, Jr. did not attend the wedding of his sister Alice, to John Small in 1688.

Thomas MERCER married Kathren BIGGE, daughter of John BIGGE of Norfolk. She may have been his second wife. She and Thomas, on Aug. 15, 1678, deeded land on the Southern Branch. (Bk. 1675-85, p. 35) Kathren's father, John BIGGE, mentions his daughter, Kathrene MERCER, in his will probated March 15, 1696/7. (McIntosh-158) His other children were, daus: Ann FAUX; Elizabeth, wife of George WHIDBY or WHITBY; Jean SIKES; Phebe and Dorothy BIGGE; son John and deceased son, Jabez. (Id-160) Thomas MERCER's will was dated Jan. 16, 1718, probated May 16, 1718. He confirmed former deeds of gift to sons, Joseph MERCER, 150 acres, and same to sons Thomas, John and grandsons Thomas and Joseph MERCER; mentions grandsons Christopher and William MERCER, sons of John MERCER; wife Catherine to have rest of estate. Wits. Wm. WILKINS, Joseph MERCER, John WILLIS. (Id 11, p. 69).

Thomas MERCER of Lower Norfolk Co. with consent of wife, Kathren MERCER, deeds to Jonathan FOLKE, sonne of Mr. John FOLKE, 60 acres of his divident land he now lives on situated between the branch called Muddy Creek and Richard WIDBY (WHITBY?). Acknowledged 15 August,1678, signed by Thomas MERCER and Kathren MERCER. (Records of Lower Norfolk Co., Va. D.Bk. 1675-1686, p.35).

Will of John BIGGE of Elizabeth River, Norfolk County, Va. (McIntosh, Abstracts, Bk.6, p.77). Will dated Sept.4, 1694, proved March 15, 1696 by Joseph HODGES and others: "To my son John BIGG my lawful heir, land including that left me by my son Jabez BIGG, held as a Patent 23 December 1688. Should John BIGG die without heirs, to grandson George WHITBY. To my son Thomas BIGG, to my daughters Ann FAUX, Katherine MERCER, Elizabeth WHITBY, Jean SIKES, Phebe BIGG, Dorothy BIGG, each one shilling (twelve pence). To son-in-law Mathew CASWELL, grandchild John HEFSOLD, grandchildren Martha, Francis, William, Jabez, Jean and Mathew CASWELL one shilling each."

I, Thomas Hollowell being Sick & Weak of body but of Sound and perfect memory doo Make this my last Will & Testament revoking all other wills by me made and this to be held and Deemed my last will in manner and form following: First I give my Soul to God who gave it more trusting in the above Merrits of my Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ for Redemption and my body to the ground to be decently buried according to the discretion of my Executor hereafter named; and my worldly goods it hath pleased God to bestow upon mee to be disposed of as followeth: Imprimis my will is that all my just debts bee paid by my Executor hereafter named. Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Hollowell fower hundred acres of Land lying & being at the head of the westerne branch of Elizabeth River to her & her heirs lawfully begotten of her body. Henry Hollowell patented 118 acres in Lower Norfolk Co.; on the north side of the Western Branch of Elizabeth River, 20 Apr. 1682, at head of his father's land and adjacent Murraie's line, along Slawter's line for the transportation of three persons: Henry Creech, his wife, and Stephen Coleman. Joseph Hallowell patented an additional 97 acres in Norfolk Co. in a fork of the Northwest River's Cypress Swamp adjacent John Godfrey, 29 April 1693 for the importation of two persons. Joseph and his wife Grace married prior to 29 Sept. 1693 when they made the following deed. Joseph Hollowell, carpenter, & Grace Hollowell, his wife, of the County of Norfolk, sell to Roger Howsden of the same county, shipwright, a piece of wood land bounding on Benjamin Hollowell's patent; above the head of the Southern Branch of Elizabeth River and the Northwest River. 29 Sep. 1692. Witness: Francis Sayor, Clomer Bray, John Richardson. (Norfolk Co., VA, Deed Book 5, p. 182). Joseph Hollowell of the County of Norfolk, planter, and Grace Hollowell, his wife, sell to Thomas Brens of the said county one tract or parcel of land lying in the woods from the head of the Southern Branch of Elizabeth River beginning at a marked poplar standing by the white oake swamp being Benjamin Hollowell's corner, by estimation 85 acres more or less, 29 Sept. 1692. Benjamin Hollowell of the County of Lower Norfolk sold to Joseph Hollowell of the same county, 480 acres of land lying and being situated by the White Oake Swamp __ parting the said Benjamin Hollowell and Moses Prescott; the said land "being granted unto the said Benja. Hollowell by virtue of a patent dated twentieth seventh of April in the year of our lord one thousand six hundred and eightie six"; acknowledged in presence of Thomas Hollowell, John Sandford, 19 Mar. 1699. Joseph Hollowell sold to Thomas Brant "one hudnred fifty acres more or less" of land "beginning at the east SE corner of Moses Prescott's land;" "granted to Benjamin Hollowell" and sold by "the said Benjamin Hollowell to the aforesaid Joseph Hollowell." Acknowledged in court 14 May 1699. Witnesses: Robt. Henning, Rutha Ers_Wood, Jr. (Norfolk Co., VA, Deed Book 5, p. 91).

Joseph Hollowell and wife Grace Hollowell sold John Miller 200 acres of land "being a tract of land granted unto the said Joseph Hollowell in a patent bearing the date the 29th day of April in the year of our Lord 1692." 20th day of March 1696. In the name of God Amen, I, Joseph Hollowell being sick of body but of Sound & perfect mind & Memory considering the certainty of death & the uncertainty of ye time of dying for the Settling of my worldly estate doe make this my last will & testament hereby revoking & anull all former wills by me made in manner & forme as followeth, Comitting my body to ye earth from whence it was taken to be buried in ____ & decent order by my Executors hereafter named & my Soule to God that gave it me in hopes of ye reserection into life. I give & bequeath unto Joseph Small ye son of John Small all my Land northerly from ye two cattle bridges to ye red oake branch __ a cross my Land to him & his heirs lawfully begotton of his body after my desease & he comes to age. 2ly I give & bequeath unto my wellbeloved wife Grace halfe the remaining part of my land & halfe my plantation & other conveniences thereunto during her life. 3ly I give & bequeath unto my daughter-in-law Mary Courtnay the remaining part of my Land & plantation to her & her heirs lawfully begotten of her body & after her Mother's decease to have the part that was given her Mother to her & her heirs lawfully begotten & for want of such heirs to John Hollowell ye son of Thomas Hollowell & his heirs lawfully begott of his body & if no such heeirs to Thomas Hollowell the son of Henry Hollowell to him & his heirs lawfully begott of his body. 4ly I give & bequeath unto Joseph Small ye son of Jno. Small two Cows then he comes to age. 5ly I give & bequeath a Cow unto Mary Dixon ye daughter of Jno. Dixon at my decease. 6ly I give & bequeath unto John Dixon, Junr. my pistols & holster at my decease & Edward Dixon my Sword. 7ly I give & bequeath to John Hollowell ye son of Thomas Hollowell my long gun & my Carpenters tools at my decease. 8ly I give & bequath unto my Daughter in Law Mary Cortnay one feather bed & furniture six pewter dishes six plates six porengers six Cows foure horses two Iron potts & two Negroes after her mothers decease if then living Cam & Pan to her & her heirs forever the personall estate named before the Negroes I give to be delivered at my decease. 9ly I give & bequath unto my Brother John Hollowell two Steers one of five & one of foure years old within a twelve months after my decease. 10ly I give & bequath unto my well beloved wife Grace all of my estate personall goods & chattles to her & her heirs forever and I doe here make & appoint my wellbeloved wife Grace my whole & sole Executrix of this my last will & Testament as written my hand & seale This 5th of May 1705. In a deed dated 21 Sept. 1722, Benjamin (Jr) sells 100 acres of land to Robert Stewart that he inherited through the death of his father, Benjamin, and his brother Thomas, his father's heir-in-law which was part of a patent granted Benjamin Hollowell, Sen., dec'd, bearing date 27 April 1696. Benjamin Hollowell patented an additional 1150 acres in Norfolk Co. on the west side of the Upper Indian Creek of the Northwest River, 29 April 1692, beginning at Joseph Hollowell's to the Cypress Swamp, along the land of Prescott for the importation of 23 persons by assignment from Mr. Edward Chilton.
