"Thomas Blanchard came to London from Penton Hants Co. with his second wife a widow with one son 12 years old and her mother and his four boys by his first wife (His wife's mother , wife and a child born on the voyage died on the voyage).
The son of his wife had had some money left him by his father and grandfather and Thomas : Blanchard and an uncle of the boy who came over a year before quarrelled as to which should have the care of the money. The boy seems to have lived with Thomas Blanchard till of age. This quarrel was in the Massachusetts court (There was but one court then) and the report of the case with the witnesses from England who saw and knew Thomas there and came over in the same ship with him is preserved in the records.

This report is our authority for our knowledge of him and is a sworn account generally considered the best kind. Then the marriage record of Samuel Blanchard continued by his son Thomas now in the vault of the American Bible Society in New York City and finally the record book of Lemuel Blanchard and the (son) of Thomas second son of Samuel makes a connected record that few families can equal or perhaps none excel.

The farm Thomas bought in Charlestown, now Medford, known as the Wilson farm back then, is given on a map still in existence. It is a piece of land higher than the neighboring land on the Mystic river opposite Charlestown and was called Blanchards Point. First called Wilsons Point. It was granted to Rev. Thomas Wilson pastor of the 1st Church of Boston.

Thomas Blanchard's will in which he divided it between his third wife and his three remaining sons is preserved in Mass. records.

His sons were Nathaniel who went Weymouth just below Boston, Thomas, George and Samuel. His wife had the use of part of the house, etc. Nathaniel sold his part to a man who quarrelled with George and Samuel and the town records of Charlestown have frequent accounts of appeals to the town officers. Samuel after the birth of of all of his children sold to George and moved to Andover as he says.

We know little of Nathaniel except that he had descendants recorded in Weymouth. Goerde was a prominent man in the town records of Charlestown and then of Medford.

Samuel is given much notice in the history of Andover and his son Thomas, father of Aron's father Nathaniel and George is often mentioned in connection with the town and church records of Medford.

The Blanchard farm is now covered by a village of over 600 people and fast growing called Wellington. But in Medford it was named Wellington by a man who bought some of the land George sold. His descendents (George's) did not continue to hold nor live on the land.

George built new house. Quite large on the highest point which still stands there and has a painted sign on it giving the information that it was built by George Blanchard and the dates and is considered a proud relic of the oldest house in that section, one of the oldest in New England. I spent much time there in Aug 1915. It should be a mecca for Blanchards as most of them are decedents from said Thomas of Penton through his sons Samuel of Andover, George of Charlestown and Medford and Nathaniel of Weymouth. It is not known that Thomas son of Thomas of Penton left a son."

Article about Harlie Adams in the Hillsdale Daily News;

"80th Birthday Observed Quietly By Harlie Adams.
Lifelong Resident of Camden Township Recalls First Railroad.
Montgomery, Feb. 15- (1957)
Harlie Adams, lifelong resident of Camden township, observed his 80
th birthday last Saturday.
Adams was born Feb. 5, 1866 (67) on a farm 1 1/2 miles northwest of Montgomery and on Oct. 21, 1896 was married to Anna Schultz Adams at Coldwater. The Rev. Elder Collins read the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Adams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October. When being asked about their golden anniversary, Mrs Adams said smilingly "50 years is a long time to live with one man."
One son, Charlie Adams was born to this coupe and resides with his wife in this village. Mr. and Mrs. Adams have one Grandson, Marlin, a senior at Montgomery High School.
Adams, a farmer, lived on the farm north of the village until 1930 when he moved to Montgomery village. He had retired from farming several years earlier and later because of lack of help was forced to again enter active farming.
Since 1930 his health has been somewhat impaired and that of his wife's. Adams has been confined to a wheel chair since the amputation of his leg two years ago.
Adams traces his ancestry back to the 1700's when his forefathers left Wales and came by boat from England to America.
He recalls hearing his mother tell how his maternal grandfather came from New York State to Michigan, Shipping their goods by boat through the lakes and canal to Toledo and thence to Coldwater.
His father came to Michigan in 1840 having come with his parents form Vermont up through Canada where they farmed a year or two and contracted to raise 1,000 bushels of potatoes for 10c per bushel. Then, by ox-cart and wagon they came to Michigan (1840) to the farm now known as the Edwin Adams farm north of Montgomery.
When Charlie Adams, father of Harlie, came to that farm, he obtained a land grant from the government, and cleared the forest. Harlie's grandfather grandfather was a cabinet maker and he built the log house while Charlie cleared the ground for planting.
Adams recalls his father telling that when they came to Michigan his grandparents had to go to Adrian to do their shopping as the railroad had not yet been put through to Hillsdale. Later he recalls the discussion that went on in the house when the "new" railroad was put through. The rails were of wood. This made "going to market" much easier as the Adams'es only, went to Hillsdale instead of to Adrian with their oxen or horse as the case might be. Adams can remember when later the railroad was extended through Montgomery or Frog Eye as it was called then, and heated discussion that went on in regards to the name of the village and location of the depot.
He recalls how a Mr. Dobbs who resided here at the time wanted the depot built southwest of where the town now is and wanted to call it Eugene City, in honor of his son Eugene Dobbs who was prominent and well known here until his death a few years ago, and how others wanted the site of the "new" depot where it is now. "At that time" Mr Adams said, "the train stopped where the depot is now, and, farther down the road between here and Ray, Ind., and also, at Ray."
"Finally" he stated, "it was decided to build the depot where it is now, and a ,man by the name William Montgomery, offered to plot the village if it would be called Montgomery." The offer was excepted, and Mr. Shephard, who owned much land here at that time had his land made into plots or lots.
Mr Adams recalls that at that time the house now owned by Leland Shook, was was about the only one which was built but that "Chet" Maters and his carpenters, who worked with him, were rapidly building more.
Mr Adams states that at that time the road which leads east out of town to M-49 was not much more than an Indian trail which went east over the Bluffs and the road now leading south out of town at that date forked at the point where the school house now stands, one fork going southwest toward Freemont, Ind., which was then Brockville, and the other going to Camden, which was then Hen-Peck. Reading at that time was Basswood Corners."

A Letter To Washington Whitney

"The following letter is self explanatory. I am copying it from the original which is about 123 years old and very faded. Some places I have to use a magnifying glass. I hope that I have made no error. This was written on two sheets of lined paper 8" by 11 1/2"
written clear to the extreme edge of each sheet front and back some written at the margin at the top and several sentences written along the side over the other writing. No space was wasted.

"Sunday Feb, 5th -1865-

Washington we received your letter your letter in due time which takes about ten days and we were glad to hear that you were so well and hope that you will continue to enjoy good health whilst you stay in the Army We are all wel here at home and it is an usual time of health here at present. We have a great deal of deep snow this winter and a good deal of it piled up in drifts . We got a letter from Jane the other day her folks and Miltons were well. The following is a copy of the letter that I got in regard to Franks capture imprisonment and death.

Camp Parole Md.
Jan 25/1865
Capt C W Branat
Sir
According to your request in regard to my much lamented Friend & brother Soldier Cop Frank Whitney, I will try & give you full particulars about his capture, imprisonment, & death. On the 29th May 1864 he started for Martinsburg Va. along with the detachment of his Regt. also some infantry Near Newton, Va. They were attacked by a force of Gilmore's Calvary. Frank was mounted on a good gray horse & when the wagon train had been taken and burned, his horse got shot in the breast and he fell and poor Frank was under his horse when taken prisoner. His knee was badly bruised, he was then taken to LynchburgVa. & from there to Andersonville Ga. Which place I saw him on the 29th June he was laying out on the sand without shelter shelter from wind & weather, he was in aparent good health. Three more of his co. boys joined him & we managed to get up a temporary shelter from the melting sun. His knee was about well so much so that he was able to get around after his rations & keep himself clean he was in good spirits & we were all living with the hope of soon regaining our freedom; this was about the last of August when he was taken down with scurvy in his mouth & limbs; his knee being yet tender and not quite healed he was attended Drs. called called several times but nothing seemed to eradicate the disease; Being earlier a prisoner than I, he was in a different detachment, although we lived under the same shelter. Sometime along in the beginning of Oct his detachment & several others were ordered off to Savannah, there was one of his Comps boys in the same detachment who went with & from him I learned the last of poor Frank. They removed all the prisoners from Savannah to a Stockade or Camp near Millen Ga. Frank kept sinking day after day until at last death ended his miseries & suffering on the 22nd of Oct 1864.
I hope these remarks will be enough to show how Frank Whitney suffered & died; he was a well behaved young man a good & true soldier & companion I am Yours obediently Geo Frasser

Well Wash some will say this is the fate of war but I think that it is the result of a predetermined course of treatment towards our prisoners by the Rebel Cheifs. Wel the keeper of Andersonville Stackade has undertaken to make his way to Canada was identified in Indiana by some of the returned prisioners, tried by drumhead Courtmartial and hung. Well he wont starve anny more of our Boys. Another thing has happened the leader of the Canada Raiders, Burley has ben given up at Suspension Bridge to our authorities. Yours truly I A Whitney

Dear Wash as your Father was writing I thought I would write a few lines too. My health has been good this winter and I was glad to hear of your good health Jane wrote in her letter her health had not been very good a part of the time this winter but was better than when she last wrote we have not had a letter from Julia in quite a while Jane wrote they had been filling a box to send to you and Lewis and Arnold Bennet you did not write in your last whether you had got your box or not write in your next I have been afraid it was aboard the train that the rebels took but I hope not Jane wrote Milt had been out to Huldies she was weaving to keep her children together she had not got her Pension yet he went out to Quincy and got some affidavits made out and had sent them on to Washington so she will get it before a great while poor Huldie has a hard time to get along, you wrote you did not know your childrens pictures how I would like to see them I often think of them often think how much comfort they took last winter here eating apples, you wanted to know when Ami was going west when he was here he intended going about the middle of next month we looked for him out here last week but I think he will come this week Mark Post are down here. Mart was one of the home guards in Ohio, last spring he had to go down to Washington for 100 days I heard he got sick so he could not go home with with the rest but had got able to work again Jane buried her boy while Mart was gone well I will have to stop I remain as ever your affectionate Mother poor Frank I have to weep when I think of his sufferings but he has gone from a troublesome world I hope to a better

Alabama Feb. 5th/65
Sabath evening
Dear Cousin Wash
As Uncle and Aunt have finished writing and have left one page blank I thought perhaps you would prefer to see it filled than otherwise& as Albert thinks he will no help fill it as he says he don't want to write too often therfore I suppose I must fill it alone although it has been but a short time since I last wrote you yet doubtless you are pleasedto rec news at any time no matter how often All are in good health I believe though Alber has something of a sore throat but nothing serious Time is passing pleasantly as usual with me. I expect soon to be released from my Winters Toil but not without regret I have but 4 weeks more before the term close I do regret it much for I have become so attached to the schilars it grieves me to think of leaving them. One cct of the terrible storms we have had for some three weeks past the scholars have not been as regular in attendance as it was imposible for some of them to get to school, but they brace the weather than I should think they could. Of all storms of snow and wind, I never in my life saw it beaten, think the weather goes ahead of Michigan some ways & what snow banks my stars, they are like mountains, two weeks ago Uncle started to school with me in the cutter but did not go far without shoveling, that beat me entirly. I rec'd a letter last night from Mary Clark saying Dwight Ford was buired one week ago today. He has been sick some time in the Hospital abd finaly he wrote to his father to come down as he thought he could get him home he seemed so anxious to see his friends & home once more, he (his father) immediately started but arrived too late as he died the eve before. He telegraphed right back home that he should start back with the remains soon as possible & at the same hour of the reception of the dispatch Charlie arrived home his time has expired by now safely home once more. I have forgotten whether you saw Dwight when lived there or not, I believe you were quite well aquainted with Charley Wash you remember Jennie Strickland do you not She has been married this Winter to a Joe Inman, and Sarah Clark is married also did you ever see her Do you rec' letters from any of my folks at home if so youd hear the news Will is teaching in the district N of us. Maria is teaching in Salim Vill Minie is home enjoying better health than last Summer, they have taken a little boy to bring up a Nephew of Aunt Alvina's his mother died last Spring Well Wash I filled this page & do not see but I must stop writing could write if I had more room but it is nearly bedtime & will close for tonight hope to hear from you soon I still remain your sincere cos.Lottie"

and brought to the house and preparations made for the burial. Mrs. WHITNEY
could not persuade herself that her husband was dead and the funeral was post-
poned. A consultation of physicians was held and no trace of life could be dis-
covered. The doctors, neighbors, and all tried to prevail on her to have the funeral
but she was unmoved and insisted that her husband was not dead. Her neighbors
thought she was insane, but she cared little for their opinions. She kept her sleepless
nights by the side of her husband applying restoratives and on the forenoon of the
ninth day discovered signs of consciousness and in short time succeeded in bring-
ing him to life. He soon recovered good health. He heard, while lying in a trance
everything that was said near him, and when he recovered sufficiently said many
ugly things of those who wished to bury him alive. Mrs. WHITNEY's father
died several years after and the coffin was used for his interment. He d. Oct 15,

Jonathan WHITNEY was born in Mendon, in that part subsequently Milford, Mass., and soon after his marriage in 1761 moved to Conway, where he resided until 1782. With his son, Joel, he went in 1789 to Ontario Co., NY, cut a stock of hay on the "Old Castle" farm near Geneva and put in four or five acres of wheat, put up a

Jonathan was in the Revolutionary war and was at the siege of Ticonderoga. The trees about the fort had been felled to allow the guns to be used. One tree, however, remained upright, against which another had fallen in a slanting direction. He climbed into the crotch of the upright tree and fired into the fort, a party under the tree loading the guns and handing them up to him. It was some time before he was discovered and driven away by the garrison.

"History of Conway
(Massachusetts)
1767-1917
By

Rev. Charles Stanley Pease, A.M.

Springfield, Massachusetts
1917

Preface
In the summer of 1900 Mr. Frederick Pierce of Chicago, author of the Field and other genealogies, visited Conway and began the preparation of a history of the town. He secured a mass of material which he proposed to publish in two volumes. Lack of financial support delayed the publication until the author's death in 1903. His estate proceed to be insolvent and after unsuccessful attempts to sell the manuscript it was deposited with the town of Conway by permission of the Judge of Probate.
At the annual town meeting in 1914 a committee consisting of Rev. E. L. Chute, H. W. Delabarre, C. F. Elmer, and C. L. Parsons was appointed to arrange for a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Conway in 1917. Mr. Billings died in 1915 and Rev. Charles S. Pease was elected to fill the vacancy. In 1916 Mr. Chute removed from town and Mr. Alvin C. Boice succeeded him on the committee. This committee was authorized by the town to publish a brief history of Conway based upon the Pierce manuscript and Rev. Charles S. Pease was appointed editor for that purpose.
In the task of preparing a history for publication the editor has been assisted by those whose names appear at the head of the various chapters. Much of the material in the Pierce manuscript proved to be of doubtful historical value and all of it was in need of careful revision. Each author has accordingly made independent researches and has written his chapter or section in his own way. The Genealogy has been carefully revised and to a large extent rearranged. The chapter on the first century was taken from the history of Conway's centennial and the chapter on the Field Library is a memorial which Dr. Rice prepared by request of the Field family. The chapter on useful men and women was written expressly for the Pierce history.
The illustrations have been contributed by different people, we are especially indebted to the Misses Frances and Mary Allen of old Deerfield for the use of a series of photographs taken about 1890, and to Miss. Florence Howland of Conway for pictures of more recent date.
The committee has not attempted to produce a complete history of Conway. This would be impossible. The aim has been rather to prepare a readable and reasonably comprehensive account of the past one hundred and fifty years. The work has been a labor of love by Conway people, who without literary experience and with little time at their disposal for such employment have simply tried to make a permanent record of the more important facts in the history of the town.

p. 451-2, that he first settled in York, Me., and in 1668, his father desired him to
leave York, and settle with him on the homestead during his lifetime, promising
him his house, and barn, and all his land about home (about 17 acres, bounded
N. by John Sherman; E. and S. by William Bond; W. by Martin Underwood),
which promise he confirmed by a deed, dated Ap. 5, 1670. Mar. 9, 1670-1, Ben-

of 2 chil. are recorded, one of whom was born in Watertown. It is possible
that he had other children born in York, or Sherburne, and perhaps Benjamin, of Fram., was his eldest child.

WHITNEY.
Families of the name of Whitney are very numerous, not only in every State in
New England, but in many other parts of the United States. There is scarcely
a single large town, where they may not be found, and it is probable that most
if not all of them are descendants of John and Elinor Whitney, of Watertown.*
A concert of action among the many intelligent, well-educated persons of the
name, might produce a very copious and interesting family memorial. The fol-
lowing is offered as a contribution towards such an undertaking.

was Selectman several years between 1638 and 1655 inclusive, and was Town
Clerk, 1655. In 1642, his homestead lot of 16 acres (where he continued to reside),
was bounded E. and S. by William Jennison; W. by Martin Underwood; N. by
Isaac Mixer. [See 60.] He at the same time owned 8 other lots, amounting to
212 acres. The Registry of Deeds shows that he made additions to these posses-
sions. His early admission as a freeman, and his early election as Selectman,
show that he held a respectable social position. His wife, Elinor, d. May 11,

* Henry Whitney settled in Norwalk, Conn., as early as 1665. Whether he was related to the Wa-
tertown family, as not been ascertained; but probably he was not a son, nor a grandson of John and
Elinor. At a town meeting in Norwalk, July 24, 1655, Henry Whitney agreed and engaged with the
town to make, build, and erect a good and sufficient ground corn mill, at the mouth of Norwalk River,
by the Falls. At the same meeting, the town voted and granted him a house lot, consisting of 2 acres,
to be laid out upon the Mill Plain, upon the right hand of the path leading down to the Old Mill, being
over the Runlett, two or three rods from the said Runlett, and also from the cartway. [See Hall's His-
tory of Norwalk, pp. 51 and 52.] There is no evidence in the History of Norwalk, that he had any
family; but it is probable that it was his son, John Whitney, who m., in Norwalk, Mar. 17, 1674-5, Eli-
zabeth, dr. of Richard Smith, and who inherited the mill; for, at a town meeting, held May 29, 1678, "it
was votaed and agreed upon between the town and the miller, John Whitney," &C. Families of this
name have continued to reside in Norwalk to a recent date, if not to the present time. For some ac-
count of them, see the Genealogical Register in Rev. Edwin Hall's History of that town.

Blanchard Family
p.69

Just what time this family arrived in town is not definitely known but they were here probably before the beginning of the century on their farm in Chateauguay section of town near the Stockbridge line. The record of the birth of the children of Aaron and Olive Blanchard and a few of the marriages and deaths of the same is from the family Bible of Aaron Blanchard, now in the possession of his great-grandson, George A. Whitney of Athol, Mass. It is the understanding of Mr. Whitney that the children of Aaron were all born in Barnard, but the "History of Royalton" gives the birth of Warren, the second child, as of Ackworth N. H. It is definitely known that some of the later children were born in Barnard and it is quite probable the family came here with some of the older children and the birthplace of Warren may give a clue as to the place from which they came.
p.70
Joseph Blanchard of Amherst N. H. owned three rights or shares of land in Barnard which he sold to Asa Taylor of Ringe N. H. on July 1, 1779. There is no evidence that Joseph lived in town.
The burial place of the Blanchards has not been found but as the family lived in the west part of the town and others of the same are known to have lived in the Stony Brook section of Stockbridge, near by, it is possible the family lot was in the cemetery in that town.

From The Writings and Notes of Harlie E. Adams.
