Obituary

Wiley Perry Bobbitt was born April 23, 1858 in Morgan Co. Ill.  He passed away at Pratt Kansas, Feb. 21, 1929 at the age of seventy years, 9 months and 29 days.  He moved with his parents to Missouri when a small boy, and grew to manhood in Gentry county.

He bacame a member of the Christian church when a young man.  He put his membership in the Christian church at Pratt, later moving his membership to the Christian church at Cullison, where he remained an active worker as long as he lived in that vicinity.

He came to Kansas in 1887 and settled in Pratt county.  He was united in marriage to Zepha Miner Dec. 23, 1896.  To this union were born five children who all survive him.

He farmed for many years in the vicinity of Cullison.  For the past four years as he has been caretaker of the Y.M.C.A. camp.

He was a kind husband and a loving father who will be greatly missed.  He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Marie Ward of Sun City, Mrs. Cecile Chinn of Coats, and Mrs. Vina Chinn of Cullison and Miner and Howard both of Sun city.  One sister, Mrs. Martilla O'Neal of Ottawa, Kansas and twelve grandchildren.

Mr. Bobbitt, better known as Perry, was loved by men and boys all through southwest Kansas, it is a well known fact that Perry had more coyote hunts and coon hunts than any other living man in this country and it was on these hunts that he formed these close friendships, and it is told by those who hunted with Perry most that no man ever sat around a camp fire with Perry Bobbitt and listened to his early day experiences that did not feel that he has associated with a real man and a true sportsman.  He never missed an opportunity to give a moral lesson or speak a good word for some one.  No one ever heard Perry Bobbitt find fault or complain.  He always found good in his associates and never spoke evil of anyone.

He was a man who made friends easily and had a host of close friends especially among the sportsmen.   Hunters from far and near knew and loved Perry Bobbitt.  Not only will he be missed by his loved ones but hunters far and near will miss those pleasant times spent with Perry out on the plains and in the canyons and at the campfires.  Few men enjoyed as many close, true friends as did Perry Bobbitt.-A Friend.

Pneumonia Fatal to One of the Best Known Old Residents of This Section

______

Pneumonia late yesterday evening claimed W. Perry Bobbitt, well known resident of this section.  Mr. Bobbitt died at the home of his brother-in-law, J. H. Boyd, 310 East Blaine St., Pratt, at 4:20 o'clock.

The aged man, who was past seventy at the time of his death, had suffered an attack of influenza several weeks ago.  He was not fully recovered when he came here to help care for Mr. Boyd, who was suffering with the disease.  In an already weakened condition, Mr. Bobbitt fell a prey to pneumonia.

With the passing of Mr. Bobbitt, this section loses one of its most picturesque characters.  As a coon hunter, he was without a peer.  His services were always in demand each fall as the coon hunting season approached.  Tall and muscular, even in his declining years he bore the distinguishing characteristics of the born woodsman.

His rugged strength was a product of clean living.  He did not use tobacco in any form and had always led an outdoor life.  At the time of his death he was caretaker for the Turkey Creek Y.M.C.A. camp, a position he had held for the past four years.  When he came to Pratt county in the srping of 1887 he freighted materials overland for the Rock Island railroad.  He later farmed for many years in the vicinity of Cullison.

Had Peculiar Talent

Mr. Bobbitt was in great demand at club meetings.  He possessed a curious talent for being able to emit clear, tinkling notes from his throat with his mouth set as if for humming.  By listening closely, clear, fine musical notes tinkling in perfect rhythm could be heard.  Mr. Bobbitt declared he did not know how he produced the sound and said he had never heard anyone else who could do it.

Mr Bobbitt came to Pratt county from Albany, Missouri, settling in Springvale township.  He was born in Morgan county, Ill.  Surviving him besides his wife are three daughters: Mrs. Marie Ward, Sun City; Mrs Cecil Chinn, Coats; and Mrs. Vina Chinn, Cullison: two sons: Miner and Howard, both of Sun City; and one sister, Mrs. Martilla O'Neal of Ottawa.  There are twelve grandchildren.

Services will be held at the Christian church here Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. A.C. Neal in charge.  Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetery.  The following will probably be pallbearers:  F.L. Farnsworth, Sr, Cleve Hill, Roy Miller, Joe Owens, A.S.Farmer and J. E. Hardesty.,

Sappington-Calbeck Mortuary is in charge.
