Nixon-Benham Bible Records
Thanks to Margie George for the permission to display the Bible pages on this web site. The history of the Bible is almost as interesting as the information. According to Margie:
"When my Greatgrandmother, Frances Billingley Nixon Benham, died, my grandmother, Margaret Ellen Benham Stewart, was 17 years of age and she helped raise the younger children left at home. She was the youngest girl and probably inherited the Bible from her mother's things. When my grandmother died, I feel that one of my aunts, Nona Marion Stewart Machen, took the Bible. That aunt's daughter, Doris Nell Machen Roberthon, must have had it among things stored after the aunt's death. Then my cousin died and my brother, Lonnie Charles Stewart, was in charge of cleaning out her things. He brought all this stuff up to his house and stored it in an old house on the place. My husband was out there poking around to see what was there and found an old trunk. My husband opened it and found the Bible and a lot of old pictures. He came to the house and told me and we both went back and looked to see what was there. The Bible had pretty well disintegrated and had lost its cover and the first and last books, but the middle part was still intact. I began to carefully look through the remains and found all the handwritten family records. I have the entire remains of the Bible carefully sealed in a plastic bag to keep it intact, except for the family pages which I have in acid-free folders in my family files. I have made photocopies and shared them with other family members."
