3.  BENJAMIN⁴ JEFFERS (DENNIS³, CALEB², RICHARD¹) was born 1787 in Portland Twp, Monangalia or Preston Co. Viriginia, and died Aft. 1857 in Franklin, Lee County, Iowa.  He married (1) CATHERINE HARTMAN Abt. 1813 in Preston Co. West Virginia, daughter of JOHN HARTMAN.  She was born March 3, 1789 in Hereford Twp, Berks Co. PA, and died 1843 in Charlestown Twp, Lee Co. Iowa.  He married (2) LYDIA STUTMAN June 22, 1843 in Lee County, Iowa.

This is from an bibliography of John T. Walker who married Lydia A.

Jeffers in Lee County, Iowa.  This lists the children of Benjamin

Jeffers and Catherine Hartman.

 

    "Mr. Walker was united in marriage March 23, 1845, to Lydia A.

Jeffers, a daughter of Benjamin Jeffers.  Her mother's maiden name was

Catherine Hartman and the Hartmans were from Germany.  John Hartman came

to America before the Revolution and settled in Germantown,

Pennsylvania.  He served throughout that terrible struggle for liberty,

and suffered many bitter privations.  Benjamin Jeffers was in the war of

1812; he was the son of Dennis Jeffers, of Scotch-Irish descent; he

married Elizabeth Trimble, and they had ten [should be 14] children, all

of whom lived to maturity except one.  Their names are: Susan, Sarah,

Elizabeth, Mary, Christena, Drusilla, William, John, Dennis, Samuel,

Benjamin, Catherine, Lydia A. and Abraham.  In 1839 Mr Jeffers removed

to Iowa and settled on a farm of raw prairie.  His wife died in 1843,

and he married for his second wife [Mrs.] Lydia Stutman; three children

were born of this union: Clara J, Rachel and Daniel, making seventeen

children of who Benjamin Jeffers was the father."

 

"Mrs. Walker was born in Preston County, West Virginia in 1828 where she

lived until ten years of age.  Her parents then removed to Lee County,

Iowa, where they passed the remainder of their days."

Jeffers, Dennis, of Dale & Jeffers, dealers in hardware and lumber, also farmer and stock-raiser, Hopkins, Missouri, was born in Preston county, Virginia, February 7, 1821.  Came to Iowa when eighteen years of age and engaged in farming in Lee county.  Moved from there to Muscatine county, remained three years, then visited the gold fields of California.  Followed mining for six years, then returned to Muscatine county, this State and married Miss Catharina Beem, September 25, 1856.  They have a family of four children: William, Nevada, Abraham, and Belle.  Lost one at the age of seven.  In 1858 he moved to Nodaway county, Missouri, and in 1870 came to this county, locating on his present farm.  Mr. J. now owns over one thousand acres of fine land, and is extensively engaged in stock raising.  He is a self-educated, self-made man, very intelligent, contributes freely to those in need, to every public enterprise, and is one of Taylor county's best citizens.

13.  STELLA⁶ JEFFERS (ABRAHAM⁵, BENJAMIN⁴, DENNIS³, CALEB², RICHARD¹) was born October 14, 1870 in Memphis, (Scotland County) Missouri, and died July 24, 1945 in Pratt, Kansas.  She married EDWARD DUNNING CHINN March 8, 1891 in Sun City, Kansas, son of JOHN CHINN and JOANNA BERGEN.  He was born March 21, 1863 in Vinton, (Benton County), Iowa, and died May 1, 1900 in Coats, Kansas.

Stella Jeffers was born October 14, 1870 in Memphis, Missouri, and died July 24, 1945 in Pratt, Kansas.  Her mother died when she was two years of age and she moved to Sun City, Kansas with foster parents at the age of 15, later moving to a farm 6 miles southwest of Coats, where she lived until she moved to Pratt 18 years ago to spend the remainder of her life.

She was united in marriage on March 8, 1891,  to Edward Dunning Chinn of Springvale, Kansas, who preceded her in death in 1900.  To this union four children were born: Ethel Tryon of Clayton, New Mexico; Athel of Liberal, Kansas; Maple of Coats, and one son who preceded her in death in 1918.  In addition to her three children who were with her at the time of her death Mrs. Chinn is also survived by one sister, Dora Woods of Aline, Okla., 22 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was converted early in life and remained a faithful Christian and active church worker to the end.  At the time of her death she was a member of the Assembly of God church.

Mrs. Chinn has six grandsons in the service of our country.  One grandson, Dick Tryon, was killed in action while serving his country.

                                  

                                                     THE OLD FARM

                On that dear old farm where the children played,

                'Neath the spreading boughs of the elms shade;

                Where two generations have come and gone,

                The children are scattered and parents alone.

                Oh!  That farm is the dearest on earth to me,

                Dearer than any other ever could be.

                I'm the mother and grandmother of these children so dear,

                And growing older each passing year.

                And I'm asking God that these I love,

                May meet someday in Heaven above.

The wedding of Athel Chinn and Vina May Bobbett was solemnized at high noon on Christmas day at the home of Rev. and Mrs. T.S. Stauffer.

The couple had intended to be married at Sun City but it was impossible to get there on account of the snow, and they were married here rather than postpone the date.

Rev.  Stauffer officiated.--Medicine Lodge Republican.

Charley Floyd Tryon (9.63), fourth son of Joab Tryon (8.33) and Mary J. (Jenkins) Tryon, was born in Scioto County, Ohio, Jan. 10, 1888. He married Ethel Janette Chinn, Oct. 8, 1914. She was born in Pratt County, Kans., Jan. 13, 1891. Charley died in New Mexico, Apr. 26, 1960, aged 72 years. Their six children were: 10.96 William Charles, 10.97 Verle Frances, 10.98 Elinor Bernice, 10.99 Dick, 10.100 Philip Lindon, 10.101 Juanita.
