Here is Shown a post-war copy of an early-war picture of George Bernard Smith of Co. E.  The back of the photograph says, "Prof. G.B. Smith, Bristol, Tenn."  and is written, "1861".  As this was a year before the 61st formed and he is  appearantly  in the cavalry, it is assumed that he served in a cavalry unit before joining the 61st Tn Inf.  As soon as his Compiled Service Records arrive, we will know.   Confederate Veteran of Jan 1909 says this about him, "Smith was in the POW camp at Johnson's Island, OH. He had smuggled his lens into camp.  He made a camera and bribed a guard to bring him   some chemicals.  There he printed out tintypes on the backs of oyster cans." (ppg 28-29).  Courtesy of John Sickles.
