Nancy Ruth Helton Parrott, wife of James Parrott, applied for a pension on 20 Jan 1906 in Greene Co.,Tn.  The following is a transcript of her application, courtesy of Mike Roueche.

W.T. Sturm of Hawkins County is presented as a witness for Nancy Parrott.  Lives Rogersville, Tennessee and is acquainted with Nancy Parrott for 40 years.  She lives at home Greene County, Tennessee, formerly Hawkins County.  She was born in Hawkins County.  Was acquainted with husband.  Does not know when she was married. Husband was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee.  I knew him before he enlisted in the Army in 1862.  Husband enlisted in Rogersville in the 61st Tennessee Infantry, Col. F.E. Pitts commanding and Co. B commanded by witness W.T. Sturm.  Witness was a member of the same company and regiment.  Husband performed regular military duty about 7 months.
Company and Regiment surrendered at Vicksburg, Mississippi.  Witness was there at the surrender.  James Parrott, the husband of applicant, was not present at surrender.  He died of Small Pox at Jackson, Mississippi.  He left his command by order of Brigade Sergeant sent to Park Hospital for having Small Pox.  He knows all this because witness was directed by order of Brigade Surgeon (James) Pitts to send him to Pint Hospital Tent at Jackson, Mississippi, where James Parrott died.  He was a resident of Hawkins County, his family were in Hawkins County at time of death in Jackson, Mississippi.  Witness knows of his own knowledge that applicant is the widow.  Witness has remained unmarried since soldier's death and she is now his widow.  Witness was in her home a short time since at Greene County, Tennessee and do not think she has anything except a small value of Household effects.  Applicant has not conveyed any property in the last two years that witness knows of.

J.J. Mitchell, trustee of Greene County hereby certifies that the property assessed to Mrs. Nancy Parrott, widow of James Parrott, amounts to $30.  Certificate from Clerk of Court that Nancy Parrott resides in Green County. Affidavit of Jno. J. Wolfe, Clerk of Hawkins County 20 January 1906.  The marriage records of Hawkins County, Tennessee were burned during the Civil War and that there are no marriage records of the County that occurred prior to the year 1865.

Affidavit of Lucinda Webster 30 January 1906 in Greene County, Tennessee.  She was present and saw James Parrott and Nancy Helton married by the Rev. Wm. White about the year 1853 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

Affidavit of Sarah E. Arnott 16 April 1906 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.  She was present and saw James Parrott and Nancy Helton married by the Rev. Wm. White about the year 1853 in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

Tennessee Board of Pension Examiners in Nashville, Tennessee 19 April 1906.  Requests record of James Parrott, Company B 61st Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A. and died in hospital in Vicksburg or Jackson, Mississippi in 1863.  War Department, Military Service Office 21 April 1906.  It is shown by the records on file in this office that James Parrot, private, Company B, 61st Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A., was enlisted 24 September 1862, at Rogersville, to serve three years or during the war.  On the muster roll of his company dated 30 April 1863, the last on file, he is reported "absent, in Hospital at Vicksburg."  No later record of him has been found.
