William C. Pile
Enlisted on May 14, 1862 at Zollicoffer,
Tennessee. He was captured before Vicksburg at the disaster at Big Black
Bridge on May 17, 1863. William apparently fell sick after arriving at
Fort Delaware on June 15, 1863. His name appears on a July 1863 roll of
prisoners transported to City Point, Virginia for exchange, with the notation
“left in hospital at Ft. Delaware.” William was apparently too sick to
travel, and died on July 15, 1863. Like thousands of other Southern martyrs,
he is buried on Northern soil. William’s name appears on a company
roll dated September 13, 1864, with the notation “captured on Big Black.”
Evidently, word of his fate had not reached his regiment, which was back
in service in East Tennessee. (45)
