It's Oscar time! The Oscars or Academy Awards, can be just as exciting for movie fans as it is for the nominees.
It was a long standing tradition in my home, as a child, for folks to come over and watch "The Oscars" and munch on snacks. There is so much out there these days, in the way of frozen hors d'oeuvres, that this party will consist more of suggestions than recipes. I promise to give a few recipes though.
So roll out your red carpet and let the festivities begin!

This is an event that centers around the TV, so unless you have a TV in your dining room (and shame on you if you do), a sit down dinner is not recommended. Sometimes, we order Chinese food, folks fix their plates and then gather in front of the set. This year, I'm planning to do an assortment of hors d'oeuvres or finger food. I will have a table set up in the dining room, for serving. The color scheme will be black and silver (for the Silver Screen, naturally!)
My tablecloth will be black. If you don't have one, you can purchase a black paper or plastic tablecloth from your local Party Store. A piece of red material, the length of my table, and about 12" in width will serve as a runner, representing the red carpet. You can also use red crepe paper or wide red ribbon.
It so happens that I have black candlestick holders, so I will use these with silver metallic candles, which are readily available in most stores that carry tapers. If you don't have black candlesticks holders, you can reverse the order using silver holders and black candles. If you don't have silver candlesticks, you can always take what you do have, and cover them with aluminum foil. The centerpiece I'm going to use is unique to me. I have a book called "The Academy Awards". It has a silver glittery cover, with an envelope on the front that says, "and the winner is". The book will stand in the center of the table and I’ll place film negative strips, so that they protrude from the pages. I'll flank the book with the candles on either side
An alternative to this, could be an empty champagne bottle with silver streamers, coming from the top, or a silver glittery top hat or derby. There are also "Hollywood" decorations available for theme parties. Visit my Winecellar page, for links to on-line party stores. I've gotten some cardboard clapboards and cameras that I'll hang about the house. We'll be using silver plastic/paper plates and napkins.
There are so many delicious hor d’oeuvres available from your local “supercenters”, that there is little need to cook. The Menu I’m providing is not cast in stone, and you can choose hor d’oeuvres to your liking.
The meatballs and chicken wings I purchase from my neighborhood Costco. They are already cooked and just need to heat and serve. You can buy ready made Horseradish Dipping Sauce, or mix some white horseradish in with some mayo. I will provide a recipe or two.
The drink du jour will be champagneNow let's see what's appearing on the menu

Shrimp Mousse
Assorted Cheeses
Artichoke Dip
Cocktail Meatballs with Horseradish Sauce
Crab Meat Toasts
Teryaki Chicken Wings
Egg Rolls
Cheese Ravioli Marinara
Assorted Chocolates & Cookies
What I plan to do is put out the mousse, cheeses and dips, while we watch the Red Carpet arrivals. There will be an accompaniment of crackers and crudite also. The meatballs are another dish that can be served and I will pass around the Crab Meat Toasts. The remaining dishes I’ll put on the dining room table during the Awards Ceremony and guests can help themselves.

SHRIMP MOUSSE
It worked so well at the Valentine’s Party, I’m going to serve it again! This time though, I’m using a scallop shell shaped soup bowl for my mold. A 7-inch cereal bowl will work for this if you don’t have a mold. You can get the recipe at the Valentine Party Page.

Crab Meat Toasts
This recipe will make 48+ hor d'oeuvres. You can make it days or weeks in advance and freeze.
6 English Muffins split and lightly toasted
6 oz. Can of Crabmeat, drained
1 stick butter (softened)
1/2 cup Hellmann’s Mayo
8 oz. Wispread Cheddar Cheese (room temperature)
6 dashes Tabasco Sauce
1/4 tsp. Celery Salt
Cream together the butter and cheese until well blended. Add the remaining ingredients and mix together with a fork, until well blended. Spread the mixture on the English Muffin halves, cut each half into quarters and place on a cookie sheet. (It’s good to have extra muffins, because I find I have left over mixture.)Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for 30 minutes. You can then throw the 48 hor d’oeuvres into a zip lock bag and keep in the freezer. They’re nice to have around for unexpected guests, and you can take out as many as you need. When ready to cook, place on a cookie sheet in a 350-degree oven for 12-18 minutes. Delish!

Farnkie Goes To Hollywood Awtichoke Dip
2 14 oz. cans Artichoke hearts (drained)
1 cup Mayo
1 cup grated Parmesan
1 cup sour cream
1/4 tsp garLic powder
1/3 cup seasoned bread crumbs
Mix AWL and put into casserole with sAWLt & pepper to taste. Top with bread crumbs and bake in 350 degree oven for 15-20 mins.
Thanks for this one, Farnkie..it sounds like a keeper!

Ravioli
This is easy. Choose your favorite fresh or frozen ravioli-large size. I like the round ones for this dish, and I'll use cheese raviloli. Cook according to directions, and serve on a platter, and just spoon your favorite sauce over them and sprinkle with grated locatelli. Serve remaining sauce on the side.
And now let's take a look at...

Scoop sez,"Don't be surprised if Peter O'Toole & Judi Dench, upset the Favorites' apple cart. Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren seem to be the shoe ins, but anything can happen at The Oscars.
Will Marty finally get his Oscar for something less deserving than his past endeavors? Let's hope not. I'm sure he has another masterpiece under his belt."
Thanks for that then, Scoop! We'll be watching!
