In the early days we lived in a set of apartments they were small, but we were happy. During the day the humans would leave and they would put me in the kitchen. Then they would put a box in the doorway of the kitchen so that I couldn't roam the house. We were in the process of moving so we have boxes of all sizes everywhere.
When they first started using the box I couldn't move it, so I would just stay in the kitchen all day and play with my toys. But, I always wondered what was going on the other side of that box. But after a couple of weeks of eating my puppy chow, I grew bigger and stronger.
One morning the humans placed their box and left. I walked over and just pushed that box right over. I was so proud!! Off to the living room it was. Man did I have a good time that day. There were all kinds of books to read, shoes to wear, socks to try on and big plants with long vines to chew on, hey I thought all kids were suppose to eat their greens. (One word of caution, never mess with the old lady's plants…bad, bad idea). It was truly a day filled with fun and learning.
After all of the activities of the day I was tired so I found a nice soft spot on the couch and laid down for a nap. After a while I heard the human's coming home. The kids were the first ones in the door. They were real impressed that I was able to move the box out of my way, and they were happy that I had found a good place to rest. But then the door opened again and I head the loudest noise I have ever heard, it was high pitched and hurt my ears. I thought the roof was gonna fall in, but it was the old lady and she was screeching "Sam, you stupid dog." Now you know where I got my nickname from. She was not happy or impressed.
The next morning I was in the kitchen coroner eating my breakfast when the human's left. They put down the box as usual and off they went. As soon as I heard the door close I trotted over to move the box and be on my way. Moving the box was no problem, even thought the humans thought they were smart and stacked two boxes on top of each other. I just smirked as I pushed the aside. It was what was on the other side of the boxes. The humans had put a really big chair in front of the door. I sat down and thought to myself, how am I gonna fix this problem. I knew I couldn't move the chair and I couldn't go under it, but hey wait, I can go over it…… Bad, bad idea.
My plan was to just hop on top of the boxes the humans had stacked up for me and then over the top of the chair. Yep, that was the plan. So up I hop and down I went. I was thinking aacckk, what happened here. I was inside of a box. The humans had stacked to boxes alright but they had left the top box upright. So when I hoped up on it, I went in it and it was very deep. No matter how hard I tried I was stuck, trapped like an animal.
Well it turned out to be a very long day with nothing to do but sit inside the box. When the human's got home I was glad cause after sitting in the box all day I was hungry and I needed to go outside and….well, just go.
When the old lady walked over to the box she just stood there looking down at me and then she lifted me out of the box and our eyes met and she knew I was sorry. From then on I didn't try and get out of the kitchen. But man did I ever find lots of new stuff to get into inside the kitchen. But that is a whole nother story.
